On Tues 3 March my partner and I walked out. The ice was in good shape (14-16"), but the drilling brought up chunks, not shavings. That should give you a clue. About 1300hrs, I drilled a hole half way down and the hole filled up with water. My friend ended up going home with 14 perch with the longest being 10-1/4". Very unusual for this lake, historically. We were targeting bluegills and crappie. Saw very few guys running for tip-downs and there were plenty of them. Far too many guys did not spread them out at all....not real bright. I caught an 8" crappie, a dozen tiny bluegills and a pile of perch on hot pink or red plastic. We fished from south of the willows 300-500 yards and to the west 400yds of the willows. There were 40 tracks/cars/wheelers on the ice at mid-day.
As we walked off, the top 3-4" was pretty slushy. We decided against going yesterday. My back was pretty tender when the alarm went off at 0500hrs after 6 back surgeries. If anyone drove out yesterday, their cajones are bigger than mine. If they drove out today, they are borderline insane.
I did get a 25" pike on 2# test that is still swimming. Sure put up a tussle. Only had 10yds of line on my reel and he nearly spooled me.
