History & Status of the Fishery

An ice-out assessment was conducted in late April/early May to evaluate the Northern Pike population in Long Lake. Long Lake has been managed since 2003 with a protected slot for pike between 24 and 36 inches and a bag of 3 fish with only one over 36 inches. The goal of this regulation is to improve the Northern Pike size structure. A total of 134 Northern Pike were captured in the 2023 ice-out assessment ranging in length from 8.6 to 37.3 inches and averaging 22.9 inches. The 2023 length frequency data suggest a higher prevalence of fish greater than 30 inches and little change in the proportion of fish greater than 24 inches since the regulation was implemented. These parameters remain below management goals, however improvement over pre-regulation size structure remains evident.

The 2023 assessment produced a sample of 35 Walleye which ranged from 18.9 to 30.8 inches in length (mean 23.7 inches). This large average size has been typical during ice-out assessments which sample mainly spawning adults. Catches of Black Crappie and Bluegill are prone to high variability when sampling during the ice-out period and are not usually accurate indicators of abundance. A total of 22 Black Crappie were captured in the 2023 ice-out assessment. Crappies ranged from 6 to 12.1 inches long and averaged 9.5 inches. Aging results indicate that growth rates are good with crappies attaining 10.2 inches at Age 4. The 2023 Bluegill sample consisted of 633 fish ranging from 2.8 to 9.5 inches in length with 48% greater than seven inches long and 10.9% over 8 inches. A total of 46 Largemouth Bass between 7.3 and 18.1 inches long were also netted. Nearly half of the bass were 16 inches and longer. Other species sampled in modest numbers included Bowfin (73 fish) and Pumpkinseed (80 fish).
