History & Status of the Fishery
Island Lake has a history of producing quality Bluegill and Black Crappie fisheries, and they are considered primary management species. Targeted surveys conducted in 2014 and 2017 found that the lake supports a Bluegill population characterized by low to moderate numbers, moderate growth rates, frequent but inconsistent year class production, and quality size structure that includes fish over 9 inches.
Lakes with similar characteristics often produce large sunfish, but large individuals may be easily overharvested. Overharvest of large sunfish negatively impacts quality and may reduce biological size potential. To protect the fishery, a regulation proposal for a 5 fish daily bag limit was developed and reviewed in 2020. The review included a lengthy public input process. The 5 fish daily bag limit option was supported by the public and implemented in March of 2021. A targeted survey using 27 trap net sets was conducted in June 2021 to collect additional baseline data on the Bluegill and Black Crappie populations. Nets were set in good habitat locations for panfish to maximize sample size for determining size and age structure characteristics.
Trap nets captured 136 Bluegill for a catch rate of 5/net. The population continued to support large Bluegill, as fish exceeding 10 inches were observed and Bluegill averaged 8.6 inches. Eighty-six percent of the sampled fish exceeded the angler preferred size of 8 inches, and 20% exceeded 9 inches. These values were higher than in the previous two surveys. Age 6 and older fish made up a majority of the sample. The lack of smaller, younger fish in the sample may indicate a recent period of low recruitment, or may simply be due to the timing of the survey in relation to the spawning period and weather patterns. As in previous surveys, growth was considered faster than average compared to similar lakes. Bluegill averaged 8.1 inches after 6 years of growth. It appears good angling opportunities continue to exist for large Bluegill.
Trap nets also captured 152 Black Crappie. Size structure was favorable for anglers as fish ranged from 7.8 to 12.3 inches, with an average length of 10.3 inches. Ages 4 through 10 were represented, with age 5 the most frequently sampled. Growth was considered average compared to similar lakes. Crappie averaged 10.1 inches after 6 years of growth. Given the current size structure, good angling opportunities appear to exist for large Black Crappie. Anglers can help maintain the crappie fishery by voluntarily reducing harvest.
Other species sampled in the survey included Bowfin, Brown Bullhead, Golden Shiner, Northern Pike, Pumpkinseed, Walleye, Yellow Bullhead and Yellow Perch.
