My buddy and I fished at Wolf Lake on September 17, 2025. We walked in on the trail from Lake Vermilion pushing a wheelbarrow with an electric trolling motor, depth finder and our gear. The 3/4+/- mile long trail is fair but rocks, roots, hills and one tree across the trail made pushing the wheelbarrow a challenge.
Our mid-September visited had water plants at their full size. Most of the lake had weeds on the surface. Use of the trolling motor required frequent clearing of the propeller. Most of the lake we saw was less than 8’ deep. The deepest water we saw was in close to the north shore of the lake. We marked depths there to at least 15 feet with most being 9-12 feet. There is also some deeper water around the island.
We caught 5 smallmouth up to 19 inches, one 18 inch pike and at least 20 sunfish (looked like bluegill to me but don’t take my word for it.) We had heard recent reports of Walleye but couldn’t confirm that there were any there.
I don’t regret making the trip but doubt I’ll go back. (If the fishing had been great do you really think that I’d be posting a fishing report and share it with folks I don’t even know?)
The trail is suitable as a canoe portage of approximately 250 rods. There is a cabin on the southeast shore of this lake.
