I have the chance to buy a Lowrance LMS-334c iGPS for little over $200. From what I have read, this unit new runs over $550. I currently have a very old and cheap garmin locator on the boat. I've been wanting one with GPS mainly for trolling purposes. So is this a good deal? Everything works on the unit.

When I first bought this unit, the GPS was poor. It would not stay locked on. The internal ant. design was bad. They replaced that unit. The GPS went from poor to fair. On this unit the sonar will lock up sometimes when you get a poor signal return, like weeds or soft bottom. After that the warrenty was over, get the picture. These problems are documented design errors. I would sell mine with extra ice ducer for 175

I couldn't find a descent sonar/GPS combo for under $300.

There are some pretty decent sales out there right now. For $200 you can get yourself a brand new unit. I would take a look at cabellas or Hodges Marine and see what you can get for $200 before buying a used, outdated unit.

What are the problems you guys are seeing? Most reviews I have read are mixed. Some guys love them with no problems, Others say the opposite. The guy I'm getting it from is friend of a friend. He says it works great. If I was buying from a stranger I wouldn't risk it. This guys says if it has problems just give it back.

long story short, stay away from the LMS-334c iGPS.

You're taking a big risk with that unit. After a very short time it was replaced with the 522C of which I have one of. I ordered the 334 and was sent a 522C instead by LEI with an explanation of some issues they were having and felt won't be resolved so they stopped selling them and released the 522C early, good decision on their part. The 522c and the 334 units are no longer serviceable, they won't support them any longer. That's your risk. Even the big high end units like LCX's 27, 111, etc are not serviceable. Yet people are still trying to get premium $$ for old used units. Not worth the risk. Your money though, just my $.02 Steve L
