History & Status of the Fishery
Sullivan Lake (DOW# 49-0016-00; Lake Class 27) is a 1,103 acre lake located near Harding, Minnesota. A Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR) owned concrete boat ramp is located on the east shore. An additional township owned access is located on the west side of the lake. Sullivan Lake has 7.7 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 57 feet. The lake is primarily managed for Black Crappie, Walleye, and Bluegill and secondarily for Largemouth Bass and Northern Pike. The lake was initially surveyed in 1980 and 38 fish sampling surveys or investigations have occurred since then with the most recent prior sampling in 2022, a Targeted Survey to evaluate Walleye natural reproduction. Currently natural reproduction and supplemental fry stocking in odd years have maintained the Walleye population.
Fall nighttime electrofishing has been utilized to evaluate young of the year Walleye abundance from natural reproduction or fry stocking since 1993. Including this survey, sixteen fall young of the year Walleye assessments have been conducted on Sullivan Lake over the years. Five previous surveys, 1993, 1995, 1997, 2018, 2020, and 2022 were natural reproduction checks. All fall juvenile Walleye assessments conducted in odd number years since 1999 have been fry stocking evaluations. The fall electrofishing survey conducted on September 26, 2023, was directed at assessing fry stocking as spring stocking occurred in May. The young of the year Walleye catch rate in 2023 was 4.0/hour, which was slightly below the median catch rate (6.1/hour) calculated from prior fall assessments on the lake. Catch rates in other fry stocked years were similar and have ranged from 0.0/hour (2001, 2003) to 18.4/hour (1999). Catch per effort in years without stocking ranged from 0.0/hour (1997) to 23.0/hour (2020 and 2022). The two highest fall electrofishing young of the year Walleye catch rates were from non-stocked years in 2020 and 2022. The mean length of young of the year Walleye sampled in 2023 was 5.6 inches and was below the long-term average (6.3 inches). Individuals captured in the 2023 assessment ranged from 5.0 to 6.3 inches in total length. Overall, fall young of the year Walleye electrofishing catch per effort has been a good predictor of year class strength in future gill net surveys. Even catch rate values less than 10.0 fish/hour show recruitment in future gill net surveys. The catch rate of 4.0 fish/hour observed in this assessment suggests a year class exists and should be represented in both future gill net surveys and angler creels. Maintaining stocking gaps and annual evaluation of juvenile survival via fall electrofishing will be necessary to assess the relative contributions of fry stocked and naturally reproduced Walleye in the future.
The electrofishing crew noted adult Black Crappie were common and Bluegill up to 7.5 inches were abundant during sampling. A few Yellow Perch and Logperch were observed. Several small Northern Pike in poor condition were encountered. Largemouth Bass were common throughout the station. Habitat conditions appeared to be in good condition and contained barren sand substrates Juvenile Walleye prefer at night in fall.
