History & Status of the Fishery
A fall nighttime electrofishing survey was conducted on Lake Marion on September 10th, 2023, to evaluate young of the year (YOY) and yearling Walleye abundance. A total of 99 YOY were sampled for a catch rate of 99.0 fish/hr, which was above Marion's historical median (25.4 fish/hr). The 2023 year class was the result of natural reproduction, since fry were not stocked that year. The 2023 catch rate was above Marion's Walleye fry stocking contingency (less than 20.0 fish/hr for two consecutive years. In 2023, the average length for YOY was 7.9 inches, which was greater than Marion's historical average (6.8 inches). In 2023, 12 yearlings were sampled, for a catch rate of 12.0 fish/hr, which was right at Marion's historical median (12.0 fish/hr). The average length for the yearling Walleye was 13.4 inches, and this was the largest historical yearling mean length on record at Marion.
