What aquatic invasive species are found in Lake Ann?
There are some aquatic invasive species found in Lake Ann including zebra mussel, Eurasian watermilfoil and brittle naiad.

Join us in the fight to prevent the spread of invasive species These sneaky creatures can hitch a ride on boats, clinging onto propellers, anchor lines, and trailers. They can even survive in hidden places like bilge water and ballast tanks, or disguise themselves in dirt and sand that sticks to nets, buckets, anchors, and waders. But don't worry, we have the power to stop them in their tracks with just a few simple steps. So let's do our part and protect our waters from these unwanted invaders.

History & Status of the Fishery

A targeted survey of nearshore fish species in Ann Lake was conducted on August 16-22, 2023, by Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) Program staff. Sampling sites were evenly spaced around the lake, and each was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot seine, where possible. Backpack electrofishing was completed at ten sampling stations, but two stations were sampled from the boat due soft sediments and vegetation. Similarly, a 50-foot seine was used to sample four stations, a 15-foot seine was used at four stations, and site conditions prevented the use of seines at two stations. Nearshore sampling captured ten species of fish including one species that is intolerant of disturbance (i.e., Banded Killifish) and one species that is tolerant of disturbance (i.e., Green Sunfish).

A concurrent summer trap net survey was also conducted by IBI Program staff. Nine trap nets were set along the shoreline in locations that encompassed multiple habitat types. Trap net sampling captured nine species of fish, including one that is tolerant of disturbance (i.e., Green Sunfish). Black Crappie and Bluegill comprised a majority of the biomass.

The nearshore and trap net data were combined with gill net data from a May 2022 survey to describe the fish community and provide a fish-based IBI (FIBI) score. The FIBI uses fish community data to measure a lake's health, and the types of fish species present can help identify any stressors that may be negatively affecting the lake environment. In Minnesota lakes, certain fish species cannot survive without clean water and a healthy habitat (e.g., Blackchin Shiner, Least Darter, and Rock Bass), while other species are tolerant of degraded conditions (e.g., Black Bullhead and Green Sunfish). The FIBI score, composed of several fish community diversity and composition metrics, indicates the overall health of a lake by comparing it to what is expected for a healthy lake. For additional information on the FIBI, search for "lake index of biological integrity" on the mndnr.gov website.

Results from this survey indicate that the fish community in Ann Lake is adversely impacted by stressors, as indicated by an FIBI score below the impairment threshold for aquatic life use determined for similar lakes. These results will be considered when the biological health of the lake is assessed during the Lower Minnesota River Watershed assessment process, which will be completed in coordination with MN Pollution Control Agency.

This lake is full of surprises! It's hit or miss fishing here....so you have to know the spots around the lake. There are plenty of pike, crappie, bluegill, and sunnies. The big ole largemouth bass are hidden in weed beds surrounding the lake. After putting away my kayak for the season I was able to land an 18" largemouth off the shore from the beach along a weed bed line! There is one main fishing dock on the eastern part of the lake, but be creative and move around. I was able to land a 31" Pike from that dock, but I had to cast very far out to draw the pike in. Good luck and happy fishing!

You may be suprised by an occassionally decent croppie and northren bite here. Sunnies are non-stop action...but for the most part on smaller size 7" or less. This lake is in the berbs of the metro area and a fox came up within 15 yards of my sled lastnight right at dusk-I was carrying a bucket full of pannies, my quess is it was scavanging the ice after everyone was gone and his nose took him nearly right up to me. Ann proved to be more than a typical ice fishing experience & the treasure lake is the little dandy just north of Ann though..Shhhhh!!
