I agree with the recommendations on Chamberlain releases. I have used cannon, Scott, walker etc with rubber bands. Always breaking the bands cranking down tension, bands get old, waves cause breaks, etc.

The Chamberlain releases are easy to set and release based on whatever tension you set. The tension to the fish can be 4lbs and the verticle tension can be 1~20lbs or more. The rod does not bounce like a bite with rubber bands but I have no problems with a hook set, etc. They are a bit pricey but well worth it if you're frustrated with rubber bands.

I think the Chamberlain release is the easiest and most reliable one to use.  You can also adjust the tension which is a nice feature.
