Yeah, the size limit has to be the main factor. It's a shame. For a pike to reach 30 inches, it has to make it through 5 seasons or so of fishing from when it first reaches "keeper size." That's just not gonna happen on lakes where there is decent ice fishing pressure. Almost everyone keeps the pike up here once they reach that eating size Just the way it is. Not saying it's right/wrong, but it's not going to help produce big pike. Now, those out of the way lakes, and I've tried a number of them, just don't seem to hold big pike. If they do, it's a low-density situation where you might have a few old big pike in there, but it would take a long time to finally catch one.
Just pure logic tells me that on any good sized lake in Vilas with decent forage, say pick Little Saint, Lac Vieux Dessert, Muskellunge, Pickeral, Forest etc...you make the 26/2 limit in place, things would change dramatically.
I think it's a mindset issue. Up here, people just want to eat them. So, little support for an increase in size limit. The DNR is caught between knowing what's best for the fishery, vs. what people want. I'm sure there are a number of lakes the DNR would be able to say, "If we put a reg on that lake, pike would thrive." But, there just isn't a push for that. I've had some good discussions with the DNR up here about size limits for pike and such...
Lakes in SE Wisconsin like Big Muskego, Eagle, and Puckaway are a few that come to mind that have great numbers of 30 plus inch fish. Maybe not trophies, but the size limits on those waters are great for producing 28-36 inch fish, and who doesn't like catching those, right?
I understand the argument Ulbian about the climate not being too much of an issue, because they can grow big even north of here. I agree with you. But, I wonder if the lack of baitfish plays into it. It's rare up here to have the amount and variety of baitfish that you find in Southern Wisconsin waters.
Another argument put forth is that there are a lot of lakes up here with muskie, and when that is the case, the pike don't grow big because the muskie dominate That sounds logical, but I've not always seen this to be the case.
