Have you guys heard of Dick Proenneke and his PBS video (and subsequent DVD) "Alone in the Wilderness"? Great video. There are also two books. I just finished the first one: "One Man's Wilderness" which covers Dick's first year in the wilderness. If you like the video, you'll like the book.

Just thought I would ask if anyone has some of the great recipes that Dick used? He favorites were beans, sourdough biscuits, homemade fruit syrup for sourdough pancakes, etc.

Here's a good place to discuss...

the cabin he built with the fire place probably will hold up longer than any house built today. the guy was just amazing, and he lived up there in his 80's. the best documentary i have saw. wish the prices for the dvd's were a little cheaper, every one i know would have a copy.

I can't help but watch it every time it's on as well. pretty funny that so many others do to.

based on today's society, this wouldn't be a bad idea to to. that's why, when I win my powerball, I'm buying a tropical island and will be spending the rest of my life there!! no phone, no tv, no radio, no internet, nothing.

Also agreed.. I love this program, watch it every time its on PBS. Especially love they guy's voice.. and that he's so matter of fact about doing these things that most of us have neither the skill or the patience for..

"Good day today.. I forged a cast iron furnace today using a few matches and a hammer. Then I, picked some wild blueberries... got face-to-face with a brown bear, boy, he wasn't too happy! Then, in the afternon, I made myself a birch-bark canoe..."

Agreed 100%. He has more finesse with his axe than I have with my band saw!

I to watch it every time it is on.

This guy was an amazing carpenter, and woodsman.

A skill I would dare say darn near 100% gone.
