My girlfriend and I are looking at heading up to northern MN. We live in Rice lake WI and we are looking to camp and fish and relax. I am looking for a body of water that is good for eyes, pike and maybe some bass.
I don't want YOUR spot, just a body of water with easy access for a canoe.
Mike, I'd say anybody trying to get a permit into the BWCA at this point is out of luck. I hear 90%+ of the permits were gone within an hour of opening registration.
We've got a cabin just 4 miles from the BWCA line. The lakes outside the BWCA are very good as well. Of course that doesn't mean we don't walk in there from time to time for a day fishing trip.
BWCA. Been there twice, can suggest some places. Fire burned area I may avoid a few years-but maybe not. Fishing should be good still there, just bring your own fuel sorce.
For moving water-I like the Flambeau near you. Good campsites for a night or two.
Let me know if I can help any.
Mike
The BWCA in Ely offers plenty of good walleye fishing. I would check the Fire conditions before you go though, there is a big one burning in the area. If you want to save some gas and driving time, the Willow Flowage in Oneida County, as mentioned already, and The Turtle-Flambeau in Mercer are also great
