GREEN BAY PACKERS
I think they feel they already have Burnetts replacement on the roster. He was always a liability covering in space, reacted slow and didn't play the ball well when it was in the air. His strength was playing by the LOS and with the emergence of Martinez and the improved play of the defensive line that type of safety just isn't needed. Not to mention he did tend to have injury issues.
I am leaning towards Davenport being the pick if he is there at 14. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Gute trade back into the 1st round if Jackson is still available in the early 20s.
James or Fitz...safeties and corner. Looking more and more like the first couple picks are QB's. Likely 4 gone by #14. So let's make a list of 10 other names that could be taken...and there is usually a surprise or two at the top... Barkley (RB), Nelson (G/T), Chubb (Edge), Ward (Corner), Fitzpatrick (S/CB), James (safety), Edmunds (LB), Smith (LB), Ridley (WR), Sutton (WR), Davenport (EDGE), Landry(EDGE). (I'm higher on Landry than most.) So there is 12.
When you spell it out...I don't see a scenario in which James or Fitz is available. They are just too good. If they were, you run to that podium. In that list, I think the most likely ones to be there are Sutton, Ridley, Smith, Landry and Edmunds.
Now, that's not a bad thing...Fitz and James being gone. I have two other safeties I'm really in love with. Ronnie Harrison (Alabama), 6'3'' 214 pounds and he will hit you so hard your grandchildren will feel it. Smart player, too. (Think second round.) Marcus Allen (Penn State). 6'2'' 202 pounds. Another enforcer type. Think 3rd or 4'th round.
Both are very good safety prospects. As a later round kid, that Terrell Edmunds from Va Tech is quite the player too. 6'2'' 210 pounds. Great athlete, unsure on the instincts.
Now, if Fitz or Ward drop and get to #10? Perhaps GB pulls the trigger and trades up for them. I'd do it in a heartbeat for one of those...just so long as the trade is a third and fourth, not a second, and I'm unsure what the trade value chart would be for such a trade.
IB...just clarifying the CBS BigBoard. It is not a mock draft. When you refer to 3 guards "in the first round", there are 2 prospects listed at guard in the top 32. Nelson and Hernandez. 3 and 24 respectively. Again, not a mock draft, just a ranking of prospects. I'm not sure that I don't agree with those rankings for those two players. I've seen Hernandez mocked to GB more than a couple times at pick #14. I'm not happy with that, you know my stance on taking guards in the first round, but that doesn't mean that the players aren't very good.
Sad about Burnett. That's not a big deal he got, so yah, Packers just didn't have interest in him anymore. Too bad. I thought he was the one guy on defense you could count on to be in position. Versatile, too. When he was out with injury, you always knew the team would be out of position multiple times that game.
Allen Hurns...can he play corner? Just making a joke....
He's not overly fast, but he's big and tracks the ball well. Had a 1,000 yard season with Blake Bortles. Yah, he could help the offense. But, he's a big slot guy. Cobb works the slot now, so I'm unsure if he would find opportunity in GB. Then there is always the injury thing... I'd prefer a few other "kick the tires" WR's that are still out there..cough/cough Brice Butler, but I'd put Hurns in that category, can't hurt to work him out.
The Packers apparently had no interest in Burnett. My guess is his body is beginning to break down and they didn't want the injury concern. Even though the Packer new coordinator runs a similar defense there will be terminology changes and a whole new install to do. Burnett would have had to learn it too. Dix, Brice, Jones, Evans and rookies will have to do.
Pack need starters and back ups in the secondary. We all know by the 4th game every body will be injured king needs to bulk up so he doesn't bounce off when he tackles and hurts himself.
Defensive line will need to get to the q.b.in a hurry. At this point even with the draft our secondary has no leader ship or veteran knowledge to teach rookies. I think we are in trouble. J.m.o.
Good lively stuff here.
I know the draft board rules but is it more likely the Packers take a Safety now at 14 assuming they stay there? Would Fitz more likely play that position in our defense? Could James or Fitz fall to 14?
From what I could tell the Packers didn't really make much effort to sign Burnett. I guess they believe he is on the down side of his career and they have Jones. That makes me believe Burnett signed for some tall dollars, although the team he went to is not known for paying them to outside FA guys.
