That's good. If you get one 50" or above, keep it if you like. Thats a once in a lifetime for most. Most people who musky fish will likely still release the fish.  All the rest make a great photo and someone else will hopefully get the opportunity to catch it too.

The Baraboo portion froze over for the first time this year last Sunday or Monday.

It will be a while before good ice with warmer temperatures this week.

If memory serves,  that's a sign for stop #7 on the "Scenic Driving Tour" of the Turtle-Flambeau Scenic Waters Area.

I came up yesterday for my last 10 days of musky fishing for the year.    Water level has been rising an inch a day for the last week.   Now within 14 inches of full pool and up 20 inches from a month ago.   Water temp was 50 last night but going to fall like a rock this week.

Long time no talk...
Anyone looking for a worthwhile fishing event to attend, the Gateway Resort is having their annual musky fishing tournament to benefit the wounded warriors in action. The entry fee is 250.00/ boat for the 2 day tournament. You can contact the Gateway at 715 476 7878, if they are busy you can give me a call I will make sure you are connected to fish ,715 776 0140. The tournament is Friday and Saturday, I don't fish in the event but am a sponsor, I look forward to the excellent food and camaraderie at the banquet on Saturday. The meeting is tomorrow at 7 pm, if you can't be here for that You can be here by 7am morning of the tournament for a brief discussion on the rules .

Did just have a phone conversation with last post, will try to retrieve his item in the morning.

This is my favorite time of the year. The "fall bite" started the latest that I have seen since I started guiding. I consider that to be when there are numbers of walleyes congregated in deeper water , days when 50-70 walleyes are caught, granted a lot of them are smaller fish but for me it is the funnest fishing of the year. I think it was the 12th that I checked the thermocline in baraboo and it was still evident, down to as I recall 35' , the 13& 14th I fished  waters other than the TFF then I believe on the 15th the thermocline was gone. That day when the water was around 50* game was on for the fall bite. A few days later, I was counting the fish, as I sometimes do in the fall, we had an incredible start then my customers remembered the big crappies we caught the year before and much to my dismay wanted to do that. We would have easily caught the most walleyes I've had caught in a single day, oh well.

I've had a very busy season as usual, this year however I had other things to attend to after getting home from fishing, that coupled with just plain getting older, I didn't have much time for writing on Lake Link. I've had many customers ask why? Guiding is an incredibly rewarding job, it is hard to say no and take a day off, I never say no, thus have no days off. I have fit in some later day times for my grand kids ,next year I plan to take a few days off for family, possibly allocate a few hours a week to set aside for writing a report.

Probably my last post of the year. I am booked for the rest of the year before I start hunting.

I'll go out on a limb to answer one of my most commonly asked questions while in the boat, Do you ever have any customers you really didnt like fishing with or would never fish with again? My answer has always been without any reservation (and very sincere) no, never.  In mid July of this year, I fished with a group, went way above what any guide I personally know would remotely do to satisfy a customer, poor time of the year for walleyes, customers were novice at best fisherman. Despite the conditions and the fisherman , I did an all you can eat shore lunch for 7 customers, of caught that day walleyes and perch shore lunch.  The customers weren't very grateful.

On the ride home from the boat landing that day I called a customer/friend to rant about my most unsatisfying day as a guide (0ver 2,000 guide trips) he said," well you need to remember all of the great customers you have and all of the people you've met.

The very next day, and I am being 100% accurate on the dates, I greeted my customers, father Rob and son Travis, I had never fished with them before, they greeted me enthusiastically at fisherman's landing. Again, never fished with them before. Father gave me three beautifully engraved filet fish cleaning boards engraved with a cnc machine Bobber Down Guide Service, he did one different I used as a sign.

It was a tough time of the season, we did ok fishing , the father told me he had been reading my Lake Link fishing reports for a long time and said when he got in my boat that he felt like he had known me for years. That is my one regret about not making the time to put out a weekly fishing report.

I took 12 days off late September to go to Alaska( my 7th year), I',ve had quite a few texts and emails from customers curious how the hunt went. I didn't buy  tag, helped my youngest brother who hadn't been in Alaska before . He had never hunted moose or been to Alaska, a few days into the hunt he told me he had a will drawn up before the hunt, we were close to making his attorney expense worthwhile , other than some good stories, came away unscathed. He got a very nice bull moose and life long memories for the both of us.

Met a lot of nice people On Lake Link , possibly until next year, have a great fall.

Jeff

Can anyone help me out?
Fished 2 days earlier this week but left something I need at a campsite on an island near the dam - long way to haul the boat back to get it. Anyone hitting the water soon and could grab it if I described the location? I’m in Wausau, I’d drive to where you are to retrieve it. Thanks.

Fished Monday and Tuesday, caught 40 walleye all on jig and minnow, slow lethargic bite, had to let them play with it for 15-20 seconds most of the time before setting the hook or you’d miss it. 9 keepers. Nothing over 13. A few by the dam, but primarily on that sharp drop off / point on the southeast side of baraboo. More caught in 15-18 FOW than anything, but caught a few at the bottom of the channels around 24 as well. Late morning and early afternoon. Water level was pretty normal for this time of year, down a couple feet.

Also they just took the docks out at spring stead.

https://youtube.com/@jackschroederoutdoors885?si=_SALnr7msbCKAf8GI was up on the turtle flambeau flowage this weekend. All the bait shops said the sucker bite has been good for muskies but we only planned on Fishing Walleyes and Smallmouth. We fished structure along the river channel and did fairly well. Everything was on jigs and minnows. I forgot weedless jig heads so we lost a lot of Jake heads and found it hard to keep our bets in the strike zone without snagging. But when we did fish seemed willing to eat. I have a YouTube video out of what we were doing @jackschroederoutdoors

Just got back from our yearly fishing/camping adventure at the TFF. While the fishing was mediocre to good, not a lot to brag about. We did manage to catch fish the weather conditions were less than ideal. At least that's my excuse. Pretty much all the fish we caught was in the 13 ft range, plus or minus a ft. We used half crawlers and some plastics . We fished hard for 6 to 8 hrs a day. Our best day was 5 eyes and 2 perch that we kept. We also caught a few smalleyes and a bunch of bluegill that were just short of wanting to clean but had we had to for our fish fry we would have had a bluegill dinner instead of walleye and perch. The catch of the week was by my brother who managed to land a 3 1/2 lb am/ fm weather radio just short of 14 inches, I just want to send a shout out to the people who maintain the campsites, you do an awesome job and I for one really appreciate your efforts. Thank You.
