Good morning,
Looking for any tips or advice. A few buddies and I will be staying up on Bastine second week of January looking to get out on the ice. We have never fished the flowage and not finding many ice reports. We are absolutely open to trying off certain landings if anyone has any they recommend. Not looking for any secret spots , (unless you want to share) just some general guidance if possible. Happy to meet up with some cold ones on the ice if anyone is interested as well. Would love to get into some crappie if possible but some tip up action would be great too. Thanks in advance! Feel free to PM me too if you would rather.

Regarding the new size limit for muskies, a few years ago I was having breakfast at Tom’s in Mercer and there was an older gentlemen talking like he does a lot of fishing in the flowage. After my breakfast I joined him and told him my son and I are addicted to musky fishing, but what did he fish for? He said that every day of the season he kept his limit of walleyes, but 3-5 times a year a musky hit would grab onto his walleye and that if they were careful they could get the musky into their net. And if the musky was legal he would take it home and eat it. I’m wondering if a significant portion of the muskies kept are kept by those fishing for other species for something to eat and maybe they are not that fond of muskies eating their walleyes anyway. So a 50 inch limit would sharply reduce that number of fish kept.
I'm a die hard musky fisherman and this is the way I look at it. If you wanna keep a musky fine by me but why are the size limits 40-50 inches. Those are the fish we need to let go. There should be a maximum size limit say around 30 or 35 in. I say the same thing about Northern. you want to get rid of all the little stunted northerns put a maximum size limit on them of around 30 in and keep all the small ones which will create more food and area for the northerns to get larger and there won't be so many stunted ones eating fry of walleyes muskies and panfish. Also if you leave it to the person's decision I think people will be a little bit smarter than keeping 8 and 10 in walleyes what are you going to do with that use it for musky bait. that's about all It'd be good for
The problem with letting the individual decide is many people only consider the here and the now. This would result in people keeping as many 8" to 10" walleyes as they can catch and keeping 20" muskies, etc. Personally I wish they would also raise the walleye limit to 15", with no fish allowed to keep over 18",with a 1 or 2 fish limit, or whatever scientifically works best. In addition to measures like this...there ought to be a 30 second rule for pictures with fish...must be returned to the water in 30 seconds or less.
