History & Status of the Fishery
Steep is a small, clear-water lake located in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The lake is only accessible via portage trails coming from Eugene or South Lakes. There are two primitive campsites maintained by the U.S. Forest Service on the lake.
The fish community was simple and only four species were sampled in 2018, which was the same number sampled in the previous survey (1974). However, the composition changed; in 2018, Northern Pike were absent and Green Sunfish were present for the first time. Cisco, Rock Bass, and White Sucker were present in both surveys, but sizes were small. In 1965, 13,689 Ohrid Trout (Salmo letnica) were stocked as fingerlings, however, none were ever captured in any of the assessments.
Steep is a beautiful lake for paddling, camping or swimming but better fishing can be found in some of the neighboring lakes.
