History & Status of the Fishery
Ottertrack Lake is located approximately 38 miles northeast of Ely within the BWCAW. This scenic lake lies along the international border with Ontario. Approximately 28% of the lake is in Minnesota. Ottertrack's shorelines are defined by steep, rocky bluffs with white cedars and other conifers being common.
There are options for access and all involve several portages in addition to a good amount of paddling. There are 5 designated US Forest Service campsites awaiting visitors when they arrive at Ottertrack.
Nine species of fish were sampled during the 2018 survey. Four gill nets were set in shallower water and an additional 6 nets were set in deeper water to sample that portion of the fish community. Rock bass (46%) and walleye (35%) dominated the catch from the shallow nets. Cisco (88%) was the most common species sampled in the deeper nets. Several northern pike and one smallmouth bass were also sampled. Lake trout have historically been present, however, none were sampled in 2018.
Walleye numbers in 2018 (9.5/gill net) were slightly above the historic average (8.8/gill net) for Ottertrack Lake. The average walleye sampled was 16.9 inches which is slightly larger than the lake average of 16.1 inches. Approximately 63% of the walleye sampled in 2018 were 15 inches or larger with a maximum length of 27.1 inches recorded. Walleye growth appears to be slightly below average.
Cisco numbers in 2018 (70.5/gill net) were above the historic average (49.3/gill net) for this lake. Cisco sizes ranged from 8.5 inches to a maximum of 11.4 inces. Lake whitefish (6.5/gill net) and one burbot were also sampled in 2018 from the deeper sets.
