History & Status of the Fishery
Boga Lake is a 27 acre lake with a maximum depth of 19.0 feet. The lake is located approximately 17 miles northeast of Isabella, Minnesota and is entirely within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). The lake is accessible via a 16 rod portage from Isabella Lake, an entry point to the BWCAW. The lake can also be accessed via the Perent River. There is one campsite on the western shore of the lake.
This lake was first surveyed by the DNR in 2014. Walleye, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, and White Sucker were found at low to moderate numbers in Boga Lake. With the lake being connect to the Perent River, fish species are able to move in and out of the lake at different times of the year for feeding or spawning. With this open system for fish movement, the survey may not have been able to sample the all of fish that use Boga Lake throughout the year.
The Walleye population is maintained through natural reproduction with four age classes found during this survey. The catch rate for Walleyes was below the average for this type of lake class, and the size of the Walleye ranged from 6.7 to 18.1 inches and had an average weight of 0.8 pounds. Growth of Walleyes in the lake appears to be average for the Finland area.
Six Northern Pike were caught in the gill nets for a catch rate of 3.0/lift, is well below the average for the lake class. Northern Pike length ranged from 18.7 to 39.6 inches. Growth of Northern Pike is slightly above average for the Finland Area lakes and there were 5 age classes represented.
The Yellow Perch gill net catch rate was above average in the number of fish with 10.0/lift. Yellow Perch sizes ranged from 4.9 to 7.1 inches with a mean of 5.9 inches. The average weight of the perch was 0.1 pounds. Growth of Yellow Perch is slower than average for Finland Area lakes.
Eight Rock Bass were sampled and ranged in size from 5.9 to 8.3 inches and averaged 0.3 pounds. White Sucker catch rate was above the average and the size ranged from 6.5 inches to 19.5 inches with an averaged 1.5 pounds.
Boga Lake is mainly a paddle-through lake along the Perent River route that may not receive much angling pressure. All anglers on Boga Lake must abide by the BWCAW regulations at all times; the lake is entirely non-motorized.
