History & Status of the Fishery
A survey targeting age-0 Walleyes was conducted at Fountain Lake on 22 September 2021 using 76 minutes of standard boat electrofishing. No age-0 Walleyes were observed. In six surveys since 2011, catch rates have fallen below 5.0/hour on-time four times with only modest catch rates of 11.0 and 24.4/hour on-time during the other two surveys. All six surveys were conducted during fry-stocked years to determine the need for supplemental fingerling stocking. The very limited return of age-0 Walleye in the electrofishing surveys suggests fry stocking has been ineffective in producing strong year classes. Additionally, the 2021 Standard Survey sampled an all-time high 14.3 Walleyes per gill net, suggesting either fingerling stocking was responsible or less likely, fall electrofishing surveys are failing to detect a high abundance of age-0 fish.
