History & Status of the Fishery
The current management plan calls for 5 million walleye fry to be stocked annually into Whitefish and another 880,000 into connected Cross Lake. Whitefish has also been stocked in even numbered years recently with walleye fingerlings at the rate of two pounds per littoral acre (5,428 pounds). Night electrofishing was conducted on September 18th, 2023, to monitor the abundance of young-of-the-year (YOY) walleyes. The total sample time was 2 hours and 1 minute in which no YOY Walleye were caught. Past catches have been as high as 44.4/hour. Walleyes that were age 1 and older were captured at a rate of 7.4/hour run-time. They ranged in size from 7.6" to 26.8" with a mean length of 10.4".
