History & Status of the Fishery
The current management plan calls for 5 million Walleye fry to be stocked annually into Whitefish and another 880,000 into Cross, both of which are connected to Lower Hay. Whitefish is also stocked in even numbered years with 2,714 lbs. of fingerlings; some of this stocking takes place at the Lower Hay access. Night electrofishing was conducted on September 18th, 2023, to monitor the abundance of young-of-the-year (YOY) Walleyes. The total sample time was 43 minutes, which resulted in a YOY Walleye catch rate of 7.0/hour run-time. These fish ranged in size from 6.4" to 7.1". Previous catches have ranged from 0/hour to 53.1/hour run-time. Walleyes that were age 1 and older were sampled at a rate of 30.7/hr. run-time. They ranged in size from 7.4" to 9.5", with a mean length of 7.9".
