Securing a flip over shack in the wind

Early season I often fish lakes in my flip over shack that have no snow on them. Obviously when I am sitting inside the wind isn't much of a factor, but when I leave the shack (to attend to tip ups) it can move quite easy. What tips or suggestions do you have to secure the shack? What kind of anchor set ups do you use and still be mobile? Hauling out 50# sand bags is not an option :-)

Stating the obvious, I bring two ropes with me always and tie off to my ATV or snomo, no matter the conditions. The wind comes up in a hurry on Superior sometimes!

Regarding the comment about the 2x4 being tough to turn to pull back through the hole, drill a hole in one end and attach another piece of rope so you can pull it straight up.

I've used a 2X4 in the hole for years tied to a small piece of rope, then tie that to my shantie's rope.  Worried about the hole freezing up when its below zero? No problem, cut a piece of carpet slightly bigger than the hole and place it over the hole.  Or use one of the hole covers several manufacturers use.  I haven't found a better anchoring system than a 2X4 in an ice hole, guarantee it'll hold your shanty.  Drill the hole upwind so when the wind gusts the shanty can't blow any further.

If you use a cordless drill for your auger then just bring a couple lag bolts/washers as anchors to drill into the ice.  If you want to be more technical then buy actual ice anchors and an anchor adapter.  It takes seconds to anchor down this way.

Normally, just pushing the slush from your holes up against the front of your shack will hold it, but I also put an eyebolt thru the rear wall of my sled. I keep a 2' rope with clips on each end in the shack. Simply hook the rope thru the eye bolt and your gas auger. You can just lay the auger down...no need to drill extra holes...no problem holding.

If you use the pull rope on the front of the sled, you won't have the wind at your back.

It's the simplest, lightest, fastest solution I could come up with...as long as you use a gas/propane auger it works great.

Ice angel ice anchors. Less hassle than a screw in anchor. Drill halfway through the ice, set the anchor in, pull it tight. You won’t move.

I take my hand auger and drill down just far enough that it doesn't quite break thru the ice. With thin ice turn the auger so it catches on the ice and doesn't pull out when pulling downwind. Then I put the rope from the shack over the auger right next ice. Takes a little playing around to find the sweet spot but beats chasing your shack across the ice. Or buy some ice screws and use those

Put a bucket of water in the tub. I put my jiffy on the bottom of the front of the shack.

I bought some used mountain climbers ice screws on eBay. No driver needed, super easy to use and will hold as good, if not, better than anything else.

I always get out and check my auto’s quite frequently to check bait, change depth, etc. so when checking I’ll always chip it open if it’s cold enough out and I’ve never had an issue. Only other issue is if the ice gets thick it’s tough to get it turned to get back out. I’m also fishing southeast wi and in recent years we dont get crazy cold anymore and don’t get much ice either but this works for me without issue.

I got the idea from I think another ice fishing forum but it works great and its easy. Take a 2x4 maybe 14” long or so depending on your hole size and tie a length of rope to it. Make it long enough to tie to your pull rope or whatever on the shanty. Drill a hole next to your shanty. Then push the 2x4 down the hole and it’ll flip against the bottom of the ice. As long as your knots hold it’ll hold.   Was out on fox lake a number of years ago when the wind picked up like 30 mph winds. We didn’t stay long after that but this worked.
