Dipsy diver and deep six
8/27/11 @ 7:10 PM
Friday morning august 26 fish report 150 to 100 fow surrounded by boats no bites (lake michigan milw county) ---I Used to fish riggers years ago, New boat 16ft isn't set up for that so I tried dipsy #1 with o-ring and deep six #000. I think I just wasn't trolling deep enough with them ,I had 4 poles. here's what I had set 20lb line (speed 1.9 to 2.3) 1st pole #1 dipsy set at 3 small white spin doc with glow fly 170 line out, 2nd deep six 000 large green spin doc alewive bugeye fly 100 to 120line out, 3rd deep six 000 pro king green blue glow spoon 100 - 120 line out, 4th dipsy #1set at 3 proking crack ice and chrome spoon150 line out. Now according to dipsy #1 chart I should get 50ft down set at 3 . The deep six package said 80 but another chart online says 40. spin docs and dodgers I switched to would cause them to be shallower I understand , but the spoons should go deeper. Well what do you think, I was surprised actually that I had no hits ,with these other reports I saw for same day and general area.

just my 3 cents I switched all my mono dipsys to Power Pro in yellow color 40# test with 10# diameter and I can get my dispys down to just over 50ft with 180loc and if you go pick up a wire dipsy rod then you can get even deeper and I dont use rings on dispys or mags just a waste of time for me anyways. Leadcore accounts for 50% of my fish during the season. and added this year a 300 copper and freaking love it!!! flasher fly set ups will run like you said a few feet higher up than the spoons.
I don’t have any guesses on the deep sixes so I will leave that part alone.
I fish out of a 16 as well, and I run 2 planers with leadcore or a snapweight up high for rainbows, 2 dipseys and now 2 riggers. Before the riggers I used to run 4 dipseys or double pound balls of the back corners if the fish were deep.
Sounds like you were in a good depth to fish at for current conditions. What’s the surface temp in Milwaukee?
Just my 2 cents but those 4 presentations all require aggressive fish because the bait is 6 feet or so from the lure. If you’re not fishing deep (100 feet down) you can work without riggers. 1 lead core or copper would be very good for that spread to get you to cover more distance side to side, and have a stealthy approach with no other contraptions near your bait except that spoon.
Another you could do is pick up a 12 oz torpedo weight, Let out 50 feet of line just like a rigger lead, attach the weight with a red offshore clip, then put it out another 200 or feet of line and you have a "mini downrigger" off the corner running deeper and inside of your dipsey.
The only true way to know where those dipseys run is to take 30 minutes and run around in shallow and bounce bottom with them and note the speed, dial and line out on the counter.
To reference it took me 285 feet of line with a mag dipsey on number 3, 20 lb test mono to hit bottom in 73 feet of water going 2.2.
Those regular size dipseys dive pretty close to 1 to 3 ratio on a number for the first 100 feet or so then it starts to flatten out. Your dipseys were probably sitting around 40 feet down.
Spread those lures out if you’re not marking or taking allot of fish. With cold water pretty much top to bottom right now, you would probably want to fish get lures spread 20 to 80 feet down in those depths and then move baits to the depth that gets hot.
5 color lead core, Dipsey just like you had it, or on a 1.5 dial setting to get more depth, Torpedo or pound ball rigged like a snapweight so you get to choose the leader length, and then another dipsey or a full core on a planer board.
Could have just been bad luck as well that day and you had a good spread. Keep at it. You have allot of options when not fishing deeper than 70 feet.
tinyfisher--- I was targeting 50 fow to 70, i was getting marks in that area not one after another but one here one there every 5 -10 minutes- I did change out spin docs with dodgers and changed flies and spoons once and speed, I guess my biggest question was , did anyone that was experienced with these divers think I was hitting that target zone with what I had set.------------------ I looked up lead core and will look up coppers and see if I want to invest more into this, I do have access to my old riggers from old boat and may just go that route. Thanks
Some days, even when they're hitting well one presentation may be dead. Seems like you had all your eggs in one basket fishing divers on every rod. If you aren't going to install riggers, I would get some leadcore or copper to increase your options. Were you marking any fish? How deep in the water column? You may have been in the right area with the wrong presentation. Also, if I'm not getting bit and I'm in the right location, I'd be adjusting depth and baits a lot more to see what they want that day.
