inflatable life vest pros and cons

Mustang makes a very good inflatable. I own the SOSuspender and they work well too.

The pros are pretty obvious, less bulk, much more comfortable to wear, not as hot during warm weather and you can actually wear them all day long while fishing.

The cons are that if you buy a manually inflatable vest, you have to be conscious to activate it. That's not easily done in the event of a high speed accident or if you fall and strike your head.

The older automatics used to be triggered if you fished in the rain, but that has for the most part been eliminated with design changes. But it still is a possibility. A friend of mine set his down in the back of his pickup truck where enough rain had pooled and when he backed his trailer in the water, enough flowed over the vest that it triggered it.

When you buy your vest, make sure that you also buy a re-arming kit at the same time and store it in your boat, in a waterproof container. That way you'll have one when you need it.

The inflateable vests are great, but only if you're wearing it!

Warm weather they are Great. But if you fish in cold weather keep the non co2 life vest nearby. The meaning behind this is.Just as your vehicles tires lose air from the cold weather, that co2 cartridge does the same. This means the vest does'nt fill 100%.

If you invest in the inflatable one, pay the difference and buy the automatic. Our club VP was wearing a manual one when he fell over board. And he awoke under water and inflated it pulling him to the top. He has convinced me to not only buy the auto but to teach your partner to run the boat so they can get back to you. My question is when you connect the ties do they have to be loose because of the size difference when they inflate. And also because women are endowed they do not sit as "flat" as for you guys. I cannot tell you what kind of design modification would be needed but there must be something that could be done.

FWIW, he inflateables are a developement out of WWII. Folks jumping over the side of the bigger ships, such as battleships and airctraft carries, would literally have their necks snapped by the impact of the life jacket hitting the water. Of course, with the inflatables, you had to remember to inflate them AFTER hitting the water or you'd wind up with the same broken neck.

Probably not the info you were looking for but still kinda cool.

IMO, the biggest con is that if they are not worn, they don't count as a PFD.

Other than that, I can't speak specifically. I've worn several different types over the years. For the most part they were all comfortable, but none of them were needed so I don't know how each performs..... thankfully.
