Turkey Hunting
Turkey season 2012 scouting and recon
1/16/12 @ 4:51 AM
So far I've witnessed 21 birds on the land this winter. 4 toms, 3 jakes and a few hens with a bunch of young birds. One of the toms must have had beard rot no beard 1" spurs. Only one became crippled recently with a bum leg and that one has already made a tasty treat for a coyote. Hoping some other birds move in from outside the area. Really mild winter so far it's looking good for them.

Went for a run around 10:30am this morning in central Ozaukee county and came across 2 toms in full strut, about 8 hens, and about 3 jakes. (couldn't see them too well due to being in a patch of woods between fields) my tags are for the middle of May, I hope I can get a chance at one of those big boys.
Got out this morning and scouted with a friend in Manitowoc county. Checked two spots he has permission for and heard at least 12 birds gobbling. A couple were young jakes , but it sounded like there were a few longbeards as well. Probably saw well over 100 birds on neighboring properties. Also saw someone taking their a child out for the youth hunt. Hopefully they had some luck because the birds had them surrounded!
I usually head up the day before the opener and scout a couple fields just to confirm they are still in the same general areas as last year. Can't wait for wednesday!!! Got the boy comin up with me this year again and hopefully he'll stay drier than previous years. Gotta cross a swamp in some spots to close the distance.
hopefully be able to get up to Antigo to scout a little bit before the second period rolls around. with a couple thousand acres of private turkey land it's gonna be tough going in there blind on ope morning. hopefully they are sticking to the same patterns they did in years past.
Did some scouting and asking permission on Monday night. 3/3 on permission, locking up about 500 acres or so. It pays to build relationships and bring goodies! On my way back, scouted one field. 17 birds, with 7 toms. Looked across the road, never moved the truck, 12 birds with 5 toms. Pretty jacked up. Have the 3rd and 4th seasons.
