quick question about hooks

I almost exclusively use spinners, mostly mepps, mostly single hook not treble. But my kids have trouble casting them in tight creeks, so I let them use worms/crawlers. Trouble is they don't always see the bites and some get swallowed. We catch and release everything we can, only keep the obviously mortally wounded trout, none so far this year but a few were tough to get the hooks out and may have died later.

The question is: Is there a circle hook or something that will work with less chance of hurting the fish? If so what size works best, I'm stopping at Fleet Farm on the way up tonight and will grab some. These are for 8-10" Brookies.

Thanks alot.

I recently restarted experimenting with bait for trout and have come full circle back to Eagle Claw L702 teflon coated circle hooks. Great for small cats in the lakes too!

I use circle hooks exclusively for trout. It works GREAT. just keep tension on the line and they normally hook themselves when they strike and turn to run.

I would be surprised if circle hooks would help with brookies. Those things inhale worms so fast it can also be surprising. Circle hooks work great for fish that hold the bait longer in their mouths (Pike for example) and you are correct you don't "Set" the hook, but rather put a steady hard pressure until the hook moves into the corner. Brookies eat like young labs they just inhale with no breathing.

yes...get circle hooks....I honestly haven't used them but from my understnading you dont' set the hook...just get a tightline and a smooth lift and the fish essentially hoooks itself in the corner of the mouth. Not sure of the level of expertise of your kids but these might just be the cats meow
