I keep hearing great things about the 6.5 X 55 caliber and every time I appraise one, I ask the owner about it. All of them love it for deer sized game. Factory ammo is a little hard to find at stores, but can be ordered on-line easily enough. I know Winchester made the model 70 featherweight in this caliber a few years ago (New Haven production) and they bring a premium to other calibers when one comes up on gun broker.
Maybe someday I will give one a try. Not too many people seem to want to part with theirs.
The 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser is a highly desirable rifle to own. I hunted long and hard to find three of them for my kids. Ballistically, they're superior to a .30-30 Win., but with a very mild recoil.
In Europe, they're used to hunt game up to and including moose, providing you use the proper bullet. I handloaded 120 grain bullets and my kids loved their rifles, killing numerous Wisconsin whitetail with one bullet. Of course, I only gave them two, and only one was loaded at a time...

I believe what you have is original 6.5 Swedish Mauser manufactured in Germany, later manufactured in Sweden. Pretty common rifle you'd be better off keeping it as a family heirloom if that is what it is. Factory 6.5 swede ammo is loaded low enough that you could probably shoot it if you wanted to. If you are unsure of the quality have a gunsmith check it out if you really want to put rounds thru it. Other wise clean it up put some oil on it and stick it over the mantle.
good luck

You have a Swedish Mauser manufactured in Germany prior to the time Carl Gustafs in Sweden started manufacturing the country's weapons.

The hole in the top of the front ring is likely a drill & tapped hole for scope mount. It would not be original to the action.
The 6.5x55 round is a good one.......certainly adequate for deer-sized game. That Mauser action is a generation before the famed Mauser 98's, but safe for the intended round. Oberndorf Mausers in any guise have a solid reputation for quality fit and finish.
