Primers $125/500 -Cheddite
Wads $75-$80/5000
Shot $38/bag plus or minus
Powder $105/8 lbs. Green Dot. Other powders may be more or less.
I reload for less than $4.50/box. Don't know what a flat of any factory shell costs. I can make them for less. Time cannot be factored in as it's a hobby plus I can get just the load I want by making it myself.

I'm hoping that I'm missing something about shotshell reloading. I reload brass for rifle shooting. It's a fun hobby and makes shooting rifles only hurt the shoulder, not so much the pocketbook.
Well, I've been kicking around reloading shotshells because I've started shooting trap and sporting clays alot more. I wanted to see what the supply costs were and here is what I come up with:
Primers: $47.99/1000 = .0479/shell
Powder: 22.99/pound (411 shots @ 17 grains per shot) = .0558/shell
Wads: 14.99/500 = .03/shell
Shot: 42.99/25 pounds (355 shots @ 1 1/8 per shot) = .1209/shell
Add these up and you get $.2547 per shell.
Multiply that by 25 and you get $6.36 per box! Now I understand you can buy things in larger quantities, but you'd be hard pressed to get your costs under $6/box.
Am I missing something here?? Is reloading shotshells for the pure hobby of it?
Of course, I'm not knocking anyone who does it as I wouldn't mind cranking out some shells myself, but if I'm losing money, I can drive to Fleet Farm in the time it takes me to load a box.
Someone shed some light on this!! Thanks
