24" Track Mount
5/1/12 @ 8:09 PM
Anyone have any experience with this length of track mount? I have a 17.5' Crestliner Sportfish that I plan to rig with Cannon Easy Trolls on either side. I am thinking about the 24" Cannon tracks because their spec indicates that at that size, the load is dispersed enough to eliminate the need for a backing plate and also because the Cannons have two more sets of mounting holes than the Traxtech of the same length. The area under my gunwales is completely shot full of foam and if I wanted to install a backer, I'd have to chip all the foam out and would still not have adequate access to tighten the aftward bolts. I was thinking the cannon 24" mounted with wellnuts. Will this be sufficient? The aluminum gunwale isn't too thick and has no wood backing. The back cleats, though, are surprisingly sturdy with only washers backing them, but not to the point that I'd consider a trolling board strapped across them. Thanks.

Thanks smokercraft427. I decided to remove the foam and run a treated 2x4 under the gunwale and mount to it. What started as a few experimental jabs into the foam turned into a fury and I got the one side cleared out. Will hit the starboard side tonight (more cabling to work around, but no big deal). Kinda disappointed in the lack of wood underneath, but it's been solid for me up until now.
I'm surprised there's not been someone with a Sportfish to comment yet. And I'm surprised the Sportfish doesn't have wood under the gunnel? I'm Not sure I would mount anything to the gunnel of a boat without a backer plate or wood construction under the gunnels. A buddy mounted a removable trolling board (treated 6x6 wraped in carpet) across his stern by utilizing the seat base as a support and he also installed a recessed 90deg. rod holder on each gunnel. If you can picture that, he had 3 spots of support for (2) riggers and (4) additional rod holders. It worked great and if it were my boat, I would feel better about it than relying on the aluminum gunnel to support all the pressure. not a lot of help but thought I'd give ya at least one comment/response!
