The squirrel in the picture is a brave soul that CRA named Charlie Brown. Here is Charlie’s story. While most male squirrels in their first mature years search for a mate, Charlie decided to be responsible and start stockpiling nuts and seeds to make sure there would be enough to eat for the next five years so that he could comfortably raise a family. Unfortunately, the physical impact on his reproductive system left him slightly disfigured for a short time until he found a mate. Unfortunately, Charlie drowned when a clumsy trout angler stumbled over a fallen tree branch launching Charlie into a deep pool that he was unable to recover from. In memorial of Charlie Brown, I have tied a new fly to commemorate this brave and wonderful soul: Goh’s Blue Ball Squirrel Nymph. To date, I have not yet tried this fly out on trout, but it has worked well for selecting out bigger blue gills as the smaller fish can’t get the two blue beads into their mouths, but bigger fish suck the whole fly in. Also, my close friends and I have agreed that it is a moral imperative for any and all positively identified female trout caught on this fly to be released immediately. This fly is tied on a #12 2X long streamer hook with a 1/8” silver bead. The blue beads are attached via 6X tippet material. Please feel free to experiment with different length hooks and colors of dubbing to suit your preferences. Let us all commemorate the humble greatness of Charlie Brown this year!
