I will be buying a fly rod and reel in the upcoming month. I will mainly use it for inland stream trout, bluegills, and small bass. What weight should I get? Anything else I should know?
Fly Fishing
Weight fly tackle
I have a 4wt that I use for gills and trout and love it for that reason. I have caught bass, northerns wallleyes and carp on it as well and do not like it but all those catches were incidental. For any of the bigger fish,I use my 6wt, unless going for northern, carp, steelhead etc. for sure then I use my 8 wt. so I would compromise and use a 5wt for anything if that is all you are goign to get. A little too havey for panfish and trout in my opinion and maybe slightly undergunned if you get into bigger fish, or more specifically bigger flies but it will work much better than a 4wt.
Get a decent line and ask or research how to take care of it. They are relatively expensive fut with care can last uite awhile. I also would go with a weaght forward floating line.
I would not worry too much about the expense of real since most flyfishers don't use it other than just to store extra line. Other than saltwater or big fish applications. Don't buy a cheep 10 buck reel though.
I'd go with a 5 wt., possibly a 6 wt., as it will help with the smallie flys. I'd say you don't need an overly long rod - probably a nice 8' will do all you want it to.
Good quality line is very important, as well as line dressing. We are a full service Cortland dealer and can help you get started right, rod, reel, line, backing, leaders, flys - if you are interrested.
Thanks,
