The bumble bees are hurting

Wouldn't a disappearing bumble bee be akin to the "canary in the coal mine" scenario? If so, this could lead to human suffering we can't even imagine. Bumble bees are important!

if I was to bag this nest and cut the small branch, and within an hour , bring them out to a wooded area out of town, will they survive? I'd probaly transport the hive in a garbage bag in a cooler..... thanks everyone... i'm mainly worried because there are small children nearby 5 days a week

don't get me wrong...when they are intruding into my space, they get wacked... but if they are just doing their business, fine with me I like the way this thread is heading!

If wasps or hornets are on my properties, they are poisoned. They are nasty critters, don't care what part they play in the scheme of things. Angry

I have to agree... if they're not bothering anyone yet, leave them be until the first hard frost or so, then you can remove if you want...just don't store it anyplace warm...I think they winter in there... those nests are engineering wonders too... wasps usually hunt other bugs, so there's that

FDL -- It is definitely a hornet's nest if it is in a tree. I would wait to mess with it until the temperature is a little colder. It seems to me that they only use the nest one season, but I might be mistaken. We had one on the back of our house one year. One day I could hear a thumping noise outside and there was a downy woodpecker just shredding that thing. There is always a natural enemy for everything if we just let things be.

wife pointed out to me the other day that we have a bees nest the size of a basketball in the Maple tree out front . Now, we live in town , on a resedential street where there is a small elementary school down the block.. I'm a bit worried because of all the parents that park out front a couple times a day, and the nest is maybe 5 feet above their heads , while they are loading and unloading children.. anyone have an opinion or thought of what I should do? Its most likely a hornets nest

Seems to coincide with the bumper crop of loons ....and I disagree... you didn't have to...

Had a large tree in full blossom last week. Must have been 500+ bumble bees on it. They were fun to watch. Only a few other bee species shared in the fun.

I have those same wasps as Kimi does but in my garden. Have not seen a nest anywhere on my property but I do have neighbors that never go outside. The bumble bees hit the yard in full force last week......had very few and now they are every where. Edit: Hornets I guess.

Ditto bald faced hornets are nasty...very territorial... they feed on bees and bugs.. Had a nest a long time ago, friend at work kept bees... he took the nest down for free... said they can/will swarm you...so wait till dark or before sunrise They are cool looking... If the aren't buzzing you, maybe can wait for winter... ...but they will keep adding on to the nest...or so I was told... they can make some big nests

I didn't get mine right in the hole Kimi.... I did saturate the nest though. They fell to the ground in no time.

We had one of those underneath our deck Kimi. We had a birthday party for my son and 3 kids got stung. I'm not one to kill anything for the sake of killing it, but if their home is attached to yours, they have to go. My wife is deathly allergic to them, has to carry an Epi-pen with her wherever she goes. I'd buy some wasp and hornet killer and let em' have it as soon as the sun goes down. Not sure why, but wasps seem to get ornery when the lawn mower goes by.
