So I have this pic on my trail camera and I think I know what it is but im just looking for some more inout. I believe that it is a fox. After this picture was taken I also got a video of this creature, but he is hiding behind some brush and you can sort of make out a head with a pointy nose.... I hate when I get pictures like this!!!!

A black mountain lion??? Has there ever been a recorded case of a black mountain lion in the USA? I don't think so, which makes it all the more bizarre. The general consensus appears to be either (a) it was a large black house cat or (b) I've completely lost my mind. The animal was not extremely large, but it was black with a long tail that it carried arched over its back. I should have just shot the damn thing (not really) then I would have known for sure. The wolverine (at least one of them) I'm 95% certain. It was large and squat and "particularly displeased" with my presence. I was poking around the creek bottoms in February (I believe) hunting for snowshoe hare. I've seen some pretty strange stuff in the woods over the years, not the least strange of which was a rather plump young buck with a red ribbon tied around its neck. Must have been somebody's "pet deer". I'd identify the OPs picture as clearly a woodchuck.

I see the woodchuck side of the op 's pic too. Just looks like a lot of air under it...maybe the cam caught it in mid stride or something.

"Of course, I also firmly believe I saw a black mountain lion in the Nicolet only 2-3 years ago so you can take any of my "sightings" with a grain of salt." A black mountain lion??? Has there ever been a recorded case of a black mountain lion in the USA? It's funny how people keep saying they saw black mountain lions, or other large black cats when a black mountain lion would be one of the rarest things to see where mountain lions are common let alone where they are as rare as hen's teeth! Maybe they saw a black panther aka. a black Jaguar. There are many reports of black jaguars but they are endangered and rarely get as far north as Arizona yet people claim to see them all the time in Wisconsin??? Forgive me for being a little more than sceptical! Sometimes we see things in the wilds that we just can't figure out what they are so our minds start racing trying to figure out what they are and all to often we come to some rather fanciful conclusions. Yes there are some mountain lions in WI, but 99.99% of the "sightings" of them are of some other animal, not a mountain lion. Are there wolverines in WI? Perhaps one or two wonder through on occasion but again 99.99999% of the sightings are something other than a wolverine.

Looks like a big woodchuck to me. If you look at pictures of woodchucks the have the same general color and build. The tails are what makes me think woodchuck. In the pictures I have been looking at the tails look really similar. The only difference is height. The op's picture the animal looks taller.

I think it's a porky. The quills on a porky don't stand out and stiffen until they are threatened. They lay like course hair normally.

The more I look at the pic from the op......kinda looks like a porky minus the quills. Don't know if that's even possible.

I'm thinking porkypine but it's hard to say for sure. I know I got porkies coming into my bear bait this year and they look like the pic with night photos. Ratoney

That is the picture I was referring to N7. I have no doubt that is a wolverine. There just isn't anything else it could be that makes sense.

The DNR planted them, called a wolvfirchuck. A cross between a wolverine, fisher, & woodchuck. They're meant to keep the wolf herd in check.

when i asked someone from the DNR about this picture i was told a wolverine was found dead on the road a couple years back now in Green Lake county. this pic was taken in Waupaca County. still not "exactly" sure what it is. i have my suspicions though. edit:i think this is the pic the dude is referring to below.

There is no way that it's a wolverine. They're rarely seen south of northern Ontario, so the chances of one wandering into Wisconsin are two! Slim and none... Mmmmmmmm.....can't agree with that Steve. In 40+ years of stomping the Nicolet, I can recall two encounters with animals I would identify as wolverines, one in Oconto county and one in Marinette. Of course, I also firmly believe I saw a black mountain lion in the Nicolet only 2-3 years ago so you can take any of my "sightings" with a grain of salt.

Last year, someone posted an IR photo from Waupaca County on one of the trail camera threads looking for an id. I'm 99% sure it was a wolverine. The subject photo in this thread looks like a garden variety woodchuck to me.
