I drew a unit 23 tag- going solo on a drop camp- neither son can make it this year. I'm actually loooking forward to the mountain time by my self in great elk country 13 miles out. I will be hunting the White River area east of Meeker 1st rifle. Last time I was there I killed a good bull on Day 2 of the hunt and had bulls bugling outside the tent for the remaining 4 days- what a trip!
Just found out we'll be archery hunting the breaks in Montana again this fall!! Long story short our outfitter in NM lost his license along with 10's of other outfitters so I'm really glad to know we'll be back after them again!!!! Still have some really crappy odds at some awesome sheep tags so who knows maybe I'll be spending a lot of time in Montana this fall...drawing an elk tag in the breaks is great, drawing a big horn sheep tag in the same unit would truly be a once in a lifetime event...
Good luck to everyone else!

adubs, Montana is much easier now to get an Elk tag with Fish & Game putting the Outfitter tags in the general pool. Ya, the fees increased to $794 for Elk or $944 for a Big Game combo but it's better for us DIY guys. With your 1pt you should draw this year. In fact my fried drew in 2010 and for 2011 he put in, thinking he was just going to get his point, but drew again! Back to back years! I just do the Landowner Sponsor Deer (no additional cost & guaranteed a tag & limited to the sponsors land)and Fly Fish the remaining part of the trip. Cant do it this year (sucks) but for next year I'm applying for the Big Game Combo and gamble I'll draw. SW Montana Dillon/Lima area LOVE IT.
this is always an exciting time of the year...apply, apply, apply!! I send in along with my brothers and father to every state for many species but we send in for elk in utah, nevada, colorado, arizona, montana, new mexico, and wyoming. We are building points in every state that allows for it. I have 4 points in Arizona, 7 in colorado, 4 in wyoming, 3 in nevada, 2 points in utah, and 1 in montana. We also apply for mule deer, antelope and sheep anywhere we can build points as well. We were lucky enough to draw a good unit in '08 and '09 in new mexico then the breaks in montana in '10 and last year was my dads hunt in Utah. This year we are applying to New Mexico/guided for an archery hunt which really increases our odds so if we draw that hunt (75% chance) our next several years will be set up perfect! 2 pts will get us back in the breaks next year(2013), 9 points for our muzzleloader colorado unit (2014), then rifle wyoming at max points the year after(2015)...then we will have enough points to be looking at nevada and arizona for archery...the cycle will continue with wyoming every 3-5 yrs, colorado every 7-9 yrs, arizona archery and nevada every 9-10yrs, montana every 2-3yrs, and then hope to draw utah every...who knows when? Of course there is always a chance to draw new mexico too. Not to mention we will be able to sprinkle in a couple speed goat and muley hunts too over the next 10yrs as well. I really look forward to the day I draw my first sheep tag but those odds are really really tough ;-( We are pretty much setting up our next 10 to 15 years of hunts!! I would highly suggest if you like to hunt out west and ever want to hunt the best units you should get a membership with the "huntin fool" and start applying!!! I send in for 29 hunts each year for points or to draw and it only costs me around a grand for state licenses and points. Sucks to spend that money just to build points but it's a lot cheaper than paying for a guide each year or a landowners tag! We love the DIY hunts so we are building points for any hunt I might want to go on in every state that will let me ;-)
