Copied from another forum post, and some solid advice.
To every Wisconsin resident who is concerned with this issue restricting crossbow use for deer hunting. I cannot emphasize this enough, The course of action that needs to be taken There needs to be a strong campaign to inform and recruit crossbow hunters to get involved. The simple way to accomplish that and voice your opinion, is to attend the Conservation Congress spring hearing (Monday April 13,2020) and vote on any questions pertaining to crossbows. There is a meeting location listed in each of the 72 Wisconsin counties. As of last year, a person may also register and vote online. Below is a link to the Wisconsin Conservation Congress website. At this point in time, it is to early for info on the 2020 hearing, but will be posted as it is finalized. I will monitor it an repost when available. You can take it to the bank, that the antis gears are already turning. THE STRENGTH WILL BE IN THE NUMBERS.

Two additional course of actions for Wisconsin residents;
1. Contact the NRB board members, voice your concerns with them. They are currently the powers to alter the crossbow season. https://dnr.wi.gov/about/nrb/members.html
2. To go further, contact your state district senators and assembly representatives. The state legislature is the ultimate authority. https://legis.wisconsin.gov/
I cant stress enough about the importance of the upcoming spring hearing questions. If you are on board for a reduction in the crossbow season then my post is moot. However, if you want the season to remain concurrent with the archery season, you need to vote. If you are against a 19 day gun season, you need to vote. I stand behind my belief that this package of questions have been crafted by a small group of anti crossbow folks, and a member of the NRB with a history of recreating questions even after similar questions have been defeated. The wording of the question fits the group and the members narrative. To go along with the vote, e-mailing your concerns to the NRB puts them on notice that another annual attack is getting old. The same behind the scenes games to craft these questions is unacceptable.
Exactly right Fin Bender! You can say "a typical late start following an early start historically results in a 15% drop in harvest." However, when you are starting with far less deer it is hiding the problem looking purely at percentages.
And, we have not heard the reason why a 30-50% drop occurred in northern counties...seems to be ignored. Why the additional 15-35% drop in northern counties? Wonder why DNR doesn't publicly explain this?
Countyline -
The last late opener was 2013. The deer population was estimated to be around 1 million deer that year. Gun hunters killed 255,000 deer.
2019 the deer population was estimated at DOUBLE that number at 2 million. Gun hunters killed 160,000 deer.
There's something definitely wrong going on and a late opener does little to explain it no matter what the DNR press release said on the subject. The DNR has lost credibility and I foresee some changes ahead.
2019 was late numbers mirror, past years drop in kill with late years.
Alot of the state was dry and crunchy leaves cold.
Post main primary rut. Many but not all bucks entering recovery stage. 9pt my oldest got was pushing fawns. Second breading was starting to show it self.
Less hunters moving around because their 20 yr old spot no longer has anything benefitting deer. Needs and requirements not ment.
Many people only hunt two days now. Why because their spot 20 years ago that their, dad, uncle whoever dropped them off at. Sucks now. And they got a deer in that two day window, but not now. So they go home and kebord warrior WI sucks.
I love hunting the Monday after opening weekend. Every ine goes home, and the deer come out and do their thing.
Maybe not like before opener, but they come out. Just got to find the bedding, and food.
All we hunt is public north west central wi.
State, fed, county, township.
Scout, scout, scout. The dried up spot you been hunting the last 20 yrs has changed, the woods changes every year.
Once you burn some boot leather and find new spots you'll find the deer.
I believe the current stucture is just fine.
I shot one doe with my xbow, saw two awesome public land bucks like my son's 9 pt. Thing's just did work out. She was shot on the ground with my new gillie suit.
Funnest year if my life, and the boys are chopping at the bit to scout. They look at onx on their phones daily to see the new pins I put on there to go check.
To each their own.
Happy hunting to all, my success and filled freezers bless you.
How come no one is looking in the mirror and realizing its you, the person looking in the mirror.
Nope let's go a blame everything possible.
Why are kids not hunting? Maybe just maybe they don't like the self entitled pick parent gripping at others bucks, or deer.
Instead of teaching horn porn, and practicing it. Practice hunting, woodsmanship, etc...
You'll get deer and be way more happy. So will the kids, and they'll run out the door to go to the cabin.
2019 all public.
Harvest was down this year........ to the state that means "we must sell more licenses!"
or maybe........ just MAYBE the deer are hurting. Up here in the North end of the state, try going out to the woods and tell me the deer are THRIVING and BEGGING for 10 more days of rifles. Shaking my fist in anger here.
Let's bring back earn a buck and sell unlimited doe tags in every county. Let's also make gun season year-long while we're at it. Yep, that's a good idea. That's where we are headed.
Crossbows do bother me, but I'll bite my tongue there. I use a compound that is so decked out with gear, it's hard to really call it "archery". If crossbows get people off the couch, I'm all for it. Granted, I do think we should watch harvest numbers there.
