RIchter anchor size?

I have a 17 ft Crestliner Mirage with a 115 Yama 4 stroke.

I'm gearing up for the season. I went to Gander and bought a 14 lb Richter anchor. On the product info card attached to the anchor it says for boats up to 18 ft. But the stand alone brochure and their website says for boats up to 15 ft.

Which is it? Should I return the anchor and get a 18 lb?

one of the reasons I like the richter is that I don't always want to let out as much line as required by some of the danforth type anchors, and I can do that because they have those spikes... I used to use river anchors for the same reason, but the richters outperform them... believe me, I Don't really want to shell out the kind of $$ that they get for them, but they do work... plus, I have been able to "de-snag' these from various types of situations on flowages, which I fish a lot... if I had more room, I'd keep 2 kinds of anchors, as the danforths do a great job with the proper amount of line out, plus if they get snagged, the cost isn't as big an issue...

I have never lost a richter anchor due to snagging... now I am knocking on wood

Ok I'll bite, why the adolation of the Richter anchor? To need to go to some of the sizes that I have seen quoated here for fairly small vessels tells me that I would not want one. Now I only had 32 years in the Coast Guard but why have you not contacted the closest Coast Guard Auxiliary and asked them? They have charts for this sort of thing. Now I doubt it will include such things as this beloved Richter but it will include such things as mushrooms and Danforths and with those I can asure you that you will hold bottem. But hey what do I know I only fish the inlets to the North Atlantic. Try this http://www.hamiltonmarine.com/ I know it is ut of your area but a great source of boating gear at good prices. And he has anchors that hold all sizes of boats in the north atlantic that .........take a look or call the CG Aux. If you can't find it PM me and I will find it for you.

I had a chance to fish in a boat equipped with a PowerPole. They are absolutely amazing, quick and easy to use, pick up and relocate with the remote control. We were skipping lures under boat docks on a windy day and it was really cool to drift/use the trolling motor to go from one dock to the next and STOP! Because we were working with the wind, the boat didn't swing around either like it might if anchored.

The only bad thing is that they're only effective in eight feet of water or less. Well that and the price. They are spendy, but the guys that have them, love them.

I believe the chain is to help keep the top of the anchor and rope down so it gets a better bite on the bottom. has any one tried the power poles? big $$$

Don't mean to sound stupid, but what does the 3' of chain do to help you anchor?

Return it right away and get the 25lber. I have 18'lund and 2 25lber's are needed to stay on a hot bite if the weather is windy. Well worth the $ for your time and headache you'll save yourself. Smile

I have 2 18#'er, well, I bought 3, donated one to the Turtle Flambeau...ouch... but it was my own fault...sorta...

just had a snap hook on it (rope came with one), and it must have opened up while I was using the motor to get it loose... now I use an anchor shackle

I bought one of these anchors last year and am afraid to use it for fear of sticking it in a crevasse and losing lots of money .... Any of you guys had a near miss?

I use a 25lb richter with 3+ feet of chain and still sometimes have problems anchoring on Winnebago with 100' of rope out (17 1/2' Lund). I do stay out in the rough stuff much more than the average fisherman though. I rigged up a drop and stay type setup and that helps.

For an average lake this anchor is overkill.

I have the 18 pound on a 17 foot Lund. Add a 3 foot chain and you will love the Richter. Their is a big difference with the chain then with out one.

I took the 14 lb back. Couldn't find the receipt so I got store credit. They are out of the 18 lb but should have them in a couple of weeks. I figure if I'm going to spend that much on an anchor I am going to get what I want and what will work. The Richter with my Drop-n-Stay should be a winning combo.
