Sorry Charlie Sport Fishing Review
June 2002
Remember the television commercial for a brand of tuna that used the slogan "Sorry, Charlie?" That is what I kept thinking about on a recent trip to the big pond. The pond I am referring to was Lake Michigan, and the reason I remembered this commercial was because Steve Novak and I were fishing that day with Captain Randy Even of Sorry Charlie Sport Fishing Service out of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. I had hoped to use the "Sorry, Charlie" line on Steve a few times that day while I was bringing in the bigger fish, but it was not to be. This particular trip, Steve was "the man." Actually, it was Randy and his first mate, Jeff Hartman that provided the opportunity for Steve and I, so the credit really goes to both of them. Sorry Charlie Sport Fishing Service promises something every charter fisherman can appreciate and it is important to remember - if your group does not catch a fish, your trip is free!
Captain Randy, Steve and I met up at the Wharf Bait and Tackle (733 Riverfront Drive, Sheboygan) early this Monday morning with the skies promising to deliver an absolutely gorgeous day. As we discussed our plans, you could sense the excitement building as we soon realized Randy's twenty-two years of experience meant we definitely were going to be where the fish were. We could not have had a better day with better wave conditions. Jeff had set up an assortment of spoons before we left the dock, and the promise of big fish soon to be hitting those spoons was to be fulfilled.
As we headed out, we were educated as to how the commercial fishermen set their nets for Chubs and Whitefish. But more importantly, how we were going to set up for catching lots of active feeding Kings, Rainbows and Coho.
The technique Sorry Charlie's crew uses is one of the more innovated and effective methods of fishing I have ever been introduced to and the results were proof enough when we had our first fish in the cooler before all our rods were set. I would like to explain in more detail, but I must honor the desires of Captain Randy - it is a way of fishing that all interested Lake Michigan angler's should experience first hand. Let me assure you, you will be surprised and impressed with this unique way of fishing.
We continued to catch an assortment of fish. Both Steve and I were being educated on the different things Lake Michigan angler's should know about the various species and how to change your tackle and presentations to be successful. I would like to point out that we were given this information freely by a individual who makes his living off of these techniques. Sorry Charlie's boat is well equipped and contains all the electronics and gear that add to an individual or a group's success. Plus, I do not think I have ever met a friendlier or better educated Captain and first mate as I had on this trip. Something else of interest is the fact that Captain Randy is also the owner and designer of the Slide Diver, a trolling sinker that you will find available in most retail outlets. You can also visit their web site at www.slidediver.com to learn more about the product.
We pulled into the dock with an assorted limit of fish. Steve and I could not believe how successful we were, besides the fact we were back at the dock within only hours after our early morning departure. After the fish were displayed and pictures were taken, Captain Randy arranged for Jeff Brown of the previously mentioned Wharf Bait and Tackle, to clean and wrap our catch for the trip home. Talk about convenience. Both Sorry Charlie's and the Wharf Bait and Tackle left us with the feeling that service is alive and well in the city of Sheboygan.
