History & Status of the Fishery
Long Lake is a small, scenic lake in Todd County northeast of Big Sauk Lake that has many desirable features. The lake has light to moderate development, a wooded shoreline, good water clarity, and it supports a diverse fish community. There is a public access on the northwest side of the lake. The lake occasionally experiences high water levels due to the presence of two inlets but no outlet. Sand was the most common shallow water substrate around the lake. Flat-stem pondweed and white-stem pondweed were the most common submergent vegetation and grew out to a depth of 18 feet. Curly-leaf pondweed is present in the lake and was more noticeable to lakeshore owners this year. A housing development has been planned for the heavily wooded east side of the lake, which could potentially change the dynamics of the shoreline landscape.
Some of the fish species that attract anglers include largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, northern pike, and walleye. Both the summer survey and electrofishing indicate that Long Lake has an abundant largemouth bass population. While most anglers will likely catch fish in the 10 to 13 inch range, there were some fish over 17 inches measured. Bluegill are a popular species in the summer time and Long Lake can produce some "keepers". A panfish assessment in 2008 documented a fair number of bluegill more than 7 inches in length with some over 9 inches being observed. A few black crappie over 10 inches were measured in the summer survey but anglers will likely have to work hard to find them.
Northern pike are abundant and anglers seeking pike should have an easy time catching them. Although there were a couple of pike in the summer survey over 24 inches, the average size was around 17 inches or just over one pound. The pike also displayed slow growth. Walleye numbers are low and the population is sustained through natural reproduction. Fishermen lucky enough to hook a walleye have an opportunity catch one over 20 inches in length. Yellow perch numbers have shown a decrease in abundance since the last survey in 2002, which is likely due to the high pike population. Perch can be an important food species for gamefish and have also been shown to be instrumental in helping maintain a well-balanced bluegill population with fast growing, quality individuals.
Brown bullhead and pumpkinseed sunfish were also caught in the summer survey. The panfish assessment also caught a yellow bullhead. White sucker have been documented in past surveys.
Maintaining the good water quality and native vegetation in Long Lake should be priority of the lakeshore owners and the county. Good shoreline practices, such as vegetation buffer strips and protecting emergent vegetation beds, are encouraged to prevent shoreline erosion, promote good water quality, and protect fish habitat. Selective harvest is encouraged for both angling and spearing to minimize the impact on the fish community. Releasing larger northern pike over 24 inches in length and voluntarily limiting harvest of large panfish will help sustain the quality and balance of the fish community.
