History & Status of the Fishery
Crosscut Lake is a 13 acre lake with a maximum depth of 35 feet located approximately 5 miles east of Isabella, MN. To access the lake you need to take USFS Rd #172 (Dumbbell Lake Road) to the Tomahawk Snowmobile Trail, then a foot path down a steep slope to one of the trails on the west shore. This remote lake is lightly fished. Open water angling is most suitable for anglers with a canoe or float tube. Shoreline angling is limited. As Crosscut Lake is a designated trout lake it is important to check the current Minnesota Fishing Regulations to follow all rules applicable to designated trout lakes.
The Brook Trout are stocked annually in Crosscut Lake as yearlings, usually stocking takes place in late May. The re-survey in September 2014 sampled 35 Brook Trout all yearlings from the 2014 spring stocking. The fish averaged 9.6 inches and 0.3 pound; the largest Brook Trout was 12.2 inches (0.9 pound). Crosscut Lake has had a history of low dissolved oxygen levels in the deeper water in late summer. Low dissolved oxygen has been measured in winter investigations also. Anglers fishing Crosscut Lake in summer and winter will want to generally fish shallower than 10 feet, if fishing is slow fish progressively shallower, to target active/feeding fish.
