That all makes sense. Thanx again for the info, I really appreciate it. Good Luck to you in your future fishing excursions. Tight Lines and Safe Travels!
Portage Lake, Houghton County
I can't say for sure, but I feel it was a combination of things. InFisherman/Walleye Insider Magazines wrote some articles claiming this was one of the top 10 places in the country to score a 10+ lb fish. The NWT (or one of them) held a Major tournament here, which also gave the area a ton of publicity. The indigenous peoples really hit it hard during the spring spawning season a number of times.(I heard over 5000 fish in just one spring) Not sure what the natural reproduction rates are, but Im sure that has also been a big factor. The rules and reg's and lack of scoring decent fish in WI I'm sure have put extra pressure on a number of MI lakes. And, we as a population as a whole, are more willing to travel further these days to try and catch fish, this area has become more accessible. Take you pick of any or all of the above.
Bubblehead, Thanx for the info I really appreciate it. Don't they get a good Walleye run in the spring? I was thinking around mid to late May depending on weather. What happened the last 5 or so years to diminish the run? Any info would be Greatly Appreciated! Thank You!
Fishkabob, I also live in central WI, and I used to fish these two lakes quite a bit. The Walleye fishery here pretty much collapsed about 5-6 years ago. As far as I know, it has yet to make much of a come back. There are some other lakes in the U.P. that at this time are much better places to fish for walleyes.
Don't see much for posts about the fishing after July. Can anyone tell me when the fishing starts getting good for walleye? I live in central Wisconsin and am looking for an alternative to Canada. Love fishing Canada but hate wasting 2 days of travel. Was hoping this would be a good choice. Any info would be Greatly Appreciated! Be safe and Good Luck!
Hello fishing friends wife and I coming to the area camping July 13-17 can anyone give me any walleye fishing information in the area just want to know if we should bring the boat 18 ft ranger thank you for any information post or PM TY
I am thinking of coming up to this lake around the third week of September. I have not fished this lake since I was a very young. My parents always rented a cabin in Chassell and we would fish for walleye. I would like to try fishing it for smallmouth bass ( 100% C&R ) and a couple of walleyes for eating while staying there. Is the fishing still as good as it used to be? Is this a good time of the year to fish the lake? Also, I have a 16 1/2 foot Alumacraft with a 60 hp tiller motor. Is my rig big enough for this body of water? Any help will be appreciated.
