Buy what fits you is correct. If you go to a big enough gun shop, they may even let you shoot a couple of different guns to really get the feel for them. I have shot a Browning BPS, 12g, 3in, for several years. It has never given any problems. it is partially gas driven on the pump, so you can really crank out shells and accurately. The gun is a little heavy but when you start swinging, she keeps right on going for a smooth follow thru. Now, that new browning A-5, sweet as the day is long! Pulls up very nice, shoots well. Comes with all the shims and pads for making it fit you. It weighs about 6.5lbs. Has a little more kick to it but I have no problems using it all day. Good luck in finding yourself a new gun. Remember, you get what you pay for.
Alot of these post are right. You need to find a gun that fits you. Everyone is differant. I personally shot a Benelli SBE II I also have a Benelli Super 90 M 1. The M1 is 13 years old and still shoots like it is brand new and it has went threw hell. I went the the SBEII for the comfort tech and the 3 1/2 shells. I didn't choose the Super Vinci just because I didn't like how it pulled up. My buddie Gander just bought the new Browning A5 and it pulls up awsome to. I haven't shot it so I don't know how it shoots. My suggestion is to find a auto loader that fits you and don't be cheap about it. Spending the big bucks is worth every penny.
If you really want to take part with the sophisticated Hunters, like I. Two shooter it is, H and K grass camo Lyon 3-1/2. Then make the switch to a benelli autoloader after mid-season for the divers...just kidd'n I hadda spell check that der big word up der. But really, look at a couple o/u before you buy. They swing really nice, fast shooting, very dependable and easy to clean.
As other have stated, just go out and get a feel for the gun that shoulders best for you. When you throw up your shotgun you want it on point right away. It should all be one smooth motion. I shoot the Benelli Super Vinci. I have a buddy who shoots a Remington VersaMax and one that shoots a Browning Maxxus and all are nice guns. The SV just shouldered better for me. I like how light it is to allow me to make quicker and more accurate follow up shots.
I use a beneli nova with a 24 in barrel because it fits me perfect and I have confidence in the gun. I put this gun through every thing and only had 2 problems with this gun in 5 years. One I got moisture in by the firing pin then it froze so it locked up the firing pin. I warmed it up with my hand and it worked great after that. Two I was hunting on a sand island and got sand all in the trigger and up by the slides. So it was tough to pull the trigger and eject shells. I cleaned the sand out it works great.
Get a gun that fits you and get confidence in it. I would also get one that shoots 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 in shells.
Check out the beneli nova and Remington 870 both great guns.
Caz hit it on the head. Additionally, find one that is known for good cycling from light loads in 2 and 3/4 up to 3 inch or higher. I can tell you that there are some brands that are better than others. I shoot beretta, and have nothing bad to say unless (like any other gun) the action gets fouled with spent powder. That certainly doesn't mean they are the only brand out there, but I've been very pleased with my old reliable AL 2. I said it was old....lol
If you are open to any gun on the market, go to a bigger dealer and shoulder as many guns as you can and buy one that is comfortable (length of pull, shouldering, swinging, etc). Kind of a vague answer and probably not a response you wanted to hear but ultimately the right one.
