10 Foot 2 pc. Rods - Anyone Interrested?

Working on some 10 foot 2 pc. musky rods. Going the 2 pc. route as 10 foot is so hard to transport in one pc. Telescopic would need too much travel of the blank and force improper guide placement. In fly rods, 4 pc. is the prefered configuration, and they land many saltwater fish that dwarf most muskies on them. Any thoughts or feedback appreciated!

Marc, Even 12 to 14 foot rods are possible, but the handles have to be matched well. Some guys like the standard shoulder width spread for the grips ad some guys like it a touch wider for their styles of casting. Something I've had success with is mixing grip material styles for those classes of rods....Hypalon for the grip points and EVA for the smooth portions so that the angler doesn't have a hard blank rubbing on their ribs. I turn down the transitions so you can't see them well, but the hands will stick in the comfort points when they slide onto the hypalon. Also, the customers that buy those from me for chasing GTs in Asia or Cubera down south are familiar with surf casting and they know not to do any flicks or sudden motions that could result in a rebound vibration on the final portion of the cast which causes line slap no matter what guide system you use. Food for thought. I think you could make this work, but you are definitely in pioneer ground right now!!!!

Rods that I have in the mix now are: 9'0" 2 pc. Med-heavy, 1-4 oz. lures - very light weight! Feathery Light! Has a ton of potential for small bucktails and topwaters 10'0" 2 pc. Med-heavy, 1-4 oz. lures - pretty light, would be a nice rod for small bucktails and trolling 5"-6" cranks. 10'0" 2 pc. Heavy, 2-6 oz. lures - pretty stout, would be a decent rod for big blades, very good for suckers and trolling. It's heavier than I'd want to cast all day, but I know some guys that would be OK with it. I have used these longer type rods for trolling, and they really help to get a good spread without boards.

goh you are right if a long rod is back weighted it would help make a long rod feel lighter.I am not sure why that would not be standard on longer musky rods.

Marc, As you can see from comments by drummer boy and ditto, long rods that are currently available are often not properly set up for casting comfort. I always used the building ideas from surf casters to combat those issues and have been very successful for both myself and my customers, but I was curious what you were thinking, especially considering that the expansion of muskie anglers into other disciplines of angling is still a very rapidly moving process now? Not looking for your trade secret, as I don't release mine either, just wondering your thought process. Hope to see you at the Expo!

There will be some guys interested, but I know a rod that long would be hard on my wrists.Even with an 8ft rod after casting for several hours if I switch to a 7ft it feels so much lighter. But then again if the blank is light enough for smaller bucktails it sure would give them a ride.As far as the 2 pc I do not see a problem, I have many 2pc trolling rods that have caught many 20 to 28lb salmon with out a problem.

I've used 10' rods for musky and IMHO they are to long for casting. Trolling they are nice but for casting 8'6 is about the limit for me.

I have a few blanks I'm playing with right now, not settled on anything particular yet. Yes - the heavier model will double as a great sucker rod, and both will be excellent trolling rods to keep a good spread without boards and other hardware. I am hoping to have a few built up and at the Wausau Musky Show next weekend.

Marc, What blank are you considering for this? I've used rods up to 12 feet for GTs in the Maldives and can tell you that the long rods do help in casting distance. However, it might be a hard sell as you're ahead of the market right now. If I didn't make my own rods, I'd be very interested.

I would think that they would have a place as trolling rods and/or sucker rods. It is good to get suckers away from the boat and those long rods really help.

After getting a 9 foot Okuma last year, I find 8 ft 6in is my max length I will throw. Maybe its more the low boat (Tuffy ESOX Mag) but i do fish a lot in other folks boat, Lund, Alumacraft, Tuffy deep V, etc. Not sure if its the length or the weight? Maybe its just needing to get use to, I know when I jumped from 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 ft, It took me almost 6 months before I could use it all day.
