Great Lakes Fishing
Thoughts on the 2013 "Spring" Weather
4/22/13 @ 1:58 PM
Thought I'd start this thread to get some additional perspective from those who have been fishing longer than I have.
The cold weather this year has left me wondering when I'll finally be in the water enjoying the season.
- Do you think the cold weather/water will result in a more "normal" 2013 season? (last year I was catching kings in mid-April)
- Last year I never really hit a coho spread very hard, because the kings were around so soon. Different story this year?
- I've been reading the reports. Hearing of a couple of coho here and there. When is everyone planning to really shoot for coho? Anyone have a recent water temp?

I concur with kingsalmon's comments completely. The only thing I would add is that I pray real hard that we can get a real honest to god thermocline this year so we small boat fisherman can continue to catch them all summer. When east winds push the fish to 200+ fow and 100 feet down I am done fishing for them. I do not remember the last time we had a "normal" summer where the thermocline is at like 35 feet down in 50-100 fow and the pre-dawn action leaves you breathless. Those were the days! Good luck this year. Hopefully we continue to get some of the natural spawners from the Michigan side to augment the reduced number of stockers!
Being primarily a shore angler on the big lake, water temperature is a make or break topic for me. It has been a very difficult spring, and i'm running out of time before work picks back up.
The winds have been bad, the rains have been worse, and the temperatures make both of those look like minor issues. At least you guys with boats can move around.
