showing and proving dominance during training, over the years I have owned a few very good hunting dogs and some of those dogs were vary stubborn animals the best technique for teaching a dog, who is in control, is started at a very early age,one of the best ways in my opinion is what i call the rundown, instead of use'ing the shock collar,at that age 6 months and younger when that dog gets stubborn and decides he will not heal on Command or stay on Command or sit on Command I found if you can run that dog down grab him or her behind the lower neck and squeeze firmly putting that dog to the ground reinforcing your Command,of course you yourself have to be in somewhat of good shape to train in this fashion, another technique for waterfowl hunting dogs is at the early age start placing a hand on the top of your puppy head when you want him or her to climb onto the bed of your truck or couch and this will help the dog learn to get into the boat or blind, simply the dog learns to put force on your hand and lifting the hind legs the dog can teeter himself into the boat this can be taught at a very early age and believe me you will be happy if you don't have to bear hug your dog to get him or her into the boat, I am by no mean a pro but thought this might help somebody training there dog.

It all comes down to teaching. Its unfair to apply punishment or corrections if the dog doesn't understand, no matter what "tools" you use i.e. heeling stick, e-coller, ect. It a dog runs into a problem in training "Simplify" and teach. Its that easy.

With the exception of the e collar you are near the dog with a rider crop, or a choke chain and the dog will still associate you with the correction or punishment. My last few dogs have been Goldens and have found repetition and consistency a far greater asset than any of the "tools"

It's not a snobby attitude amoung dog trainers. You are entitled to your own opinion and techniques, but very poor techniques should not be shared to the general public, its a better idea to teach using tools and not to discipline using your hands. If you consistently Use your hand to hit a dog instead of a training whip, or consistently throw your dog down to teach it to sit instead of a choke collar, you are developing a Clear picture that Punishment comes from extremities, no hands are safe, and you fail to develope a safe zone around you(the master). Guess what happens when your neighbor's child (viewed as submissive from your dog) comes over to pet your dog waving his hand out. Guess what happens when you hold your hand out for a retrieve. your dog runs the other way, and has a hard time bringing marks back. Most people consider this Common sense. And it is sad it has to be posted for people understand.

"There are tools, and appropriate ways that will correct the most stubborn dogs, choke collar, training whip and for the better trained, shock colalrs." All in all are they not just and extension of your arm/hand? I am not a pro trainer but have trained my share of dogs. Lardy's program is different than Evan Grahms Smartworks, Or the 10 Minute Retriever program. Because of that are any of these proven programs wrong? Just becuase you never herd of it or don't agree with it does not mean it wont work. Some will work with one dog and not on another. I hate the attitudes of many of the dog people, they have their heads so far up their arses that they need to unzip their pants to see where they are going! Ty thank you for showing restraint!

I guess you sumemerized my thoughts in a shorter phrase. Any dog that you have to "teeter" or "bear hug" into a boat is not a trained dog. as far as throwing your dog to the ground, I dont recommend to hard of punishment with your bear hands. Using hands as punishment is never a good idea. There are tools, and appropriate ways that will correct the most stubborn dogs, choke collar, training whip and for the better trained handlers shock collars.

I am not completely sure of what your talking about. Been running through the steps of boat entry and exit for a couple weeks. It's funny how young pups dont realize they have back legs. All in all, the process is going great. I recommend "Free shaping" aka "clicker training" All tasks before you ask or even try to train a dog to do something. Once the dog learns the task, bind a word to it, keep repeating. This method of training is WIDLY missed by the hunting community. However, it is an amazing techinque that is used in nearly every other area of training. Agility, Comformation, police, search and rescue, trick dogs ect. Hunting dogs adapt extremely well with it because they are not only treat driven, they are also praise and retrieve driven.
