Just tried it this weekend and it seemed to help my drahthaar out a lot, he usually is stopping to clean out his paws quite a bit and I didn't see him clean out at all this weekend.
Be careful toughening up there pads on hard surfaces, if done in excess in can cause joint issues later in life.
If you're just looking to keep your dogs paws good, just make sure to run them alot. Running them on gravel or pavement roads will keep a dogs paws tough. Start off running them a bit and then just run them more as time progresses.
Or if you're looking for something that helps to heel, and keeps some snow and ice buildup down, I've always used bag balm. Much cheaper then mushers secret.
We own a golden retriever who ices up pretty quickly at the "wrong" temperature. We bought mushers wax for $20 and were excited to give it a try. We don't get more than 10 minutes out of it before icing up and that is with a very liberal application.
On the positive side, my hands are nice after applying it, but we will not be buying again.
I use it for my two labs while late season pheasant hunting. The can is almost empty, but to be honest, I don't really know how well it works. I guess I feel better using it, thinking I am doing something to helpful. I put it on them just before we leave the truck to hunt, and it is probably all wore off by the time we get back. I have put it on their feet at home if it looks like the pads are real dry, but I have always kenneled them afterwards because I was afraid of it staining the carpet also. I think they probably lick some off, but I never saw any problem from it. I will be doing some research before this summer as I am thinking about a ND hunt in fall and want to toughen them up a bit for the stubble fields. I remember that seemed to bother them last time out..............
