What is odd is that it is supposed to snow in Kansas City on Tuesday. I remember it used to snow in Iowa in April but I have never seen snow in KC this late. I'm going bass and crappie fishing in southern Kansas later this week and I hope it warms up or it will be a waste of fuel.
Talked with our outfitters, Doug and Gail Gawley, Ear Falls On. Their camp is located on Lac Seul and the ice pushed out of their bay on the 19th of April. There have been years in the past where we could not get on our lakes until the very last week of May. Post spawm will be our deal. 32 and a wake up....SPLIT
Mark it on the calendar, because yesterday was the official ice out for Big Hook Camps in the Opasquia Provincial Park. Sandy Lake Seaplane managed to land a 206 Cessna at the main camp (Central) and inspect the dock. According to Tom Brotherston, "A large amount of slush is still floating over the majority of the lake." Water levels are about normal for this time of year, however Tom mentioned the woods is extremely dry and in need of moisture.
From a fishing perspective, the early ice departure will mean the walleye post spawn should occur in mid-May for our area. The fish should be hungry and aggressive come May 19th.
