Howdy, been hearing and seeing a lot of people talking about this new Alabama Rig. Apparantly its been so ipressive it has been banned in Minnesota and Tennessee. There are also photos of guys catching 4 largemouth on this rig at once. Just wondering if anyone out there has or tried it and if its as good as its cracked out to be.

I think it's just good marketing. It's just like a spinner bait. Lots of vibration and it simulates shad bunches. I think that other than spring and fall it's not a bait you want tied on. Reminds me of a lot of marketed baits that were big for a while and drop off the face of the planet.

Heard that would be legal in WI.

I know that you can only have 3 lures in the water at one time, but say I put 3 swimbaits on it, then put 2 more swimbaits without hooks on it? Is that legal or not?

Finally heard back from the DNR about the ruling on this rig.  Here's the email I recieved.

In Wisconsin, this rig would be considered 5 hooks, baits or lures, each capable of catching a different fish, and therefore not legal in Wisconsin.   If it only had 3 such hooks, baits or lures attached, then it would be legal.  However, with all 3 hooks, baits or lures attached to one line, the angler would not be able to fish with any other lines at the same time.

I have the Wisconsin DNR forwarding my email around trying to give me an answer as to whether it's legal in WI.  Haven't heard back from them yet with the exception of I'll forward your email to some other guy.

My argument is that it's like any other crankbait with multiple hooks.  I can have 3 of them in the water even if each one has 2 or 3 hooks hanging off it.  This is a lure, held together by wires, not fishing line like a crappie rig.

I'll let you know when I hear something definitive.

I tried this on the Milwaukee River and have charges filed against me for "Mutilation of a Corpse".

Those shad are deadly, but a guy could throw a simple tandem rig w/o all that goofy wire and do plenty good. Wouldn't touch it if it was legal.

Next big thing will be sticks of "dynamite" with hooks. LOL

I can see it catching bass, but common, isn't it getting a little ridiculous.

It's illegal in Minnesota becuase there is more than one lure on it, just like if you had more than 3 lures on it it would be illegal in Wisconsin.
