I soak them in salt water for a little while, then rinse them, thenI take and put them in the refridgerator over night with water on them and then pile ice over the top. Seems to firm them up real well.

Just wondering if the Crappies are good to eat this time of year, or do they get kind of soft?

Took my two boys out for some panfish action. The wind was blowing pretty hard, but made for some nice drifting. Caught a mix bag of gills and crappie. Not a lot of size, but kept a couple of decent ones for dinner. Lots of boats on the lake today.

Still happy with this lake. Kids and I caught 40-50 crappies and bulegills almost everyday we went out last week and early this week. We kept 8-10 fish each day for meals and the freezer. Thanks Mike for the info, and help. Plain hooks with a minnow, or 1/2 a crawler worked best for us. We were in 6-8 ft. of water. A 18 inch bass found my 5 year olds hook, what fun!

Report from Monday evening. Fished for a few hours and caught a lot of nice bluegills and a few bass along the shoreline on leeches. When the sun went down we switched to crappies and caught a few drifting.

Was up there most of last week and we did good with the crappies. Not really anything size wise to bragabout but the quantity was there. Miny mites twister tails and the special bait all worked great. Chartreuse was good. Drifting is key and the drift we were doin caught all the fish I had never done before in 20 years of fishin this lake. funny how things change

Fished here on 7/10. Crappies were pretty active. Had to watch out for "fishermen" that were in the bass tourney. Nice etiquette guys!! Flying around at full speed and weaving in between boats filled with real fishermen and families.

was up all last week and fishing was good.. bass were slow but the ones we caught were bigger ones.. swimbaits spooks frogs and spinnerbaits were the ticket.. points with stumps and ledges with stumps were key... oh frog fish of course in the slop... crappie are everywhere.. fish 6 ft down from 10-32 fow and it is one after another... now the special treat.. the day i get up there my bro sent me a pic of a northern he caught the day before that was 35in... it was the biggest we had ever seen open water fishing... the next day in the same spot he and my grandpa caught 2 pigs this time.. grandpas was close to 38in and bros was about 36.. they got cut off one other time and that was it for the pike... one little weed pocket with a creek coming in and they were there for some reason for a few days... spinnerbaits was the key for them... oh and i did catch a little 16 inch pike and had a tank pike try to eat it at the boat... scared the crap out of me... good luck all..

Did fairly decent on Otter yesterday. Rained quite a bit before we got there, but after that it let up for the night. Kept 35 crappies and 5 or 6 gills.. size on the crappies were nice... smallest being 9 and biggest at 11. Most were caught on minnows and nightcrawlers... anybody know where to catch some walleyes on this lake? Just another great day on the water!

Went to Otter last week for bass. Nothin doin. Tried everywhere with every technique and nothing. Switched over to panfishin and did really well. Mostly crappies with an occasional bluegill and perch. Heard some guy got a 27 inch walleye too! Nice catch!

Out last night 5-19 from 5pm to dark. Lots 'o crappies in shallow now. Small though--9incher the biggest we caught. we were using minnows/small jigs and bobbers and fish were not really hammering the minnows. Would swim up and circle around with bobber. Should probsbly have had smaller bobbers or strike indicators. Pretty funny to see fins circling bobbers so the surface bite is definitely on right now. Fly rod guys doing well in shallow bays--- a foot or two of water. Some gills being caught shallow as well. Again size not the best but might be a good time for the kids. Bring the bug dope for mosquito dive bombers about 7:30-----swarming pretty good without any anti-aircraft defense system.
