Had my limit in eyes a couple wks ago by 10am. Middle of the week is best, stay away from weekends, to many boat. Nothing big, all around 14.5 to 16 inches. Good eaten size. All I ever use for eyes is a lite weighted lindy rig with leaches and stinger hook. All but one was caught on trailing stinger hook. I troll with electric motor as slow as I can, and stay on 14-16 ft. of water. Doesn't matter if its sunny, cloudy, or wind direction. I always catch my limit. Sometimes quick, other times takes longer.

On 6/8/04 I had the opportunity to fish Maxinkuckee for at least 8 hrs. (10:30 - 7:30pm) The mostly sunny, windy, and hot weather conditions did not seem to have a positive effect on the fish, or at least I was unable to locate their greater numbers. And although 4 fish were boats- 3 largemouth to 18" & a walleye at 19", fishing was slower than I'd anticipated. All the bass were taken from 22'to 24", and trolling crankbaits with wire line proved effective for enticing them to strike. These bass were taken during the mid-afternoon hours and all from different features (fingers breaking sharply) off of a large hump. However, the walleye was contacted at 6pm, and live bait (jig/crawler harness) worked at 20' produced this fish. Three huge bluegills were also thrown in the mix while working the jig/crawler combo and I would approximate these fish to be in the 1 lb. class. I thought for sure more walleye would follow the first, but this was not the case, even after checking other known productive structures. Wish I would have been rigged for them!

Conditions: Partly Sunny     Air Temp: 76° - 80º F     Water Temp: 71° - 75° F

Another good trip. Found some walleyes and smallmouth on 10ft flats with floating jigheads and spinner rig and crawler. I also caught a walleye in 30ft of water. I had 3 walleye (13, 14, 15") one smallie and two rockbass. My friend had one walleye 17+", two smallmouth (14, 15") and one largemouth caught on a topwater lure in a channel. Walleyes were caught all through the day, during cloudy conditions. Much more boat traffic and waves than previous trips.

High pressure continued to dominate the skies for most of the morning, but mid-afternoon cloud cover begin to settle in and increase up until early evening. Although I fished from 11:30am until 7:30pm, the only "activity" I experienced occurred at approx. 5:30 to 6:30, where I was able to boat 1-largemouth 17" and a nice smallie at 18". Two other fish were hooked but got off, with one straightening out the hook. I'm assuming it was either a large smallie or largemouth, since I boated the largemouth about 5 minutes later from the same vicinity. Crankbaits were tried, but a slow presentation- jig/crawler combo. proved to be effective once again, and again 20'-24' was where fish were contacted.

Today I experienced no walleye activity and even put forth some effort working a deep hump (47'breaking into 65') for them, but to no avail. It's possible the walleye became active later into dusk, especially with light conditions being intensified throughout much of the day. Keep em Coming, WMK

The effort at taking the time to learn how some structures in Maxinkuckee are configured is beginning to yield some dividends. Specifically, I'm referring to center-lake humps associated with deep water, (50 or greater) as these are currently producing some walleye, (4 today, from 16"- 19") and smallmouth (3 today, in the 15"-17" class) Being the 2nd day after a cold front, I expected fishing to be tough. And for the most part, the fish were certainly not jumping in the boat. Nevertheless, working & reworking known features at depth levels ranging from 9' to 45' allowed me to finally hone in on a productive depth zone, once fish became active. Today, almost all the fish were contacted at the 22'level, but a couple of solid strikes were had at 26'and 30', and one of these felt like a good sized walleye. Once again, a bottom walker with a floating jig/crawler combo proved an effective form of "presentation". All the fish activity occurred between 11am & 2pm, when warm SW winds seemed to be at their peak. However this activity halted almost immediately after winds shifted to the NW later in the afternoon.

Beautiful evening on Maxinkuckee saturday. Storms stayed to the north and winds calmed a bit. I caught 2 green smallies (15,14") and 3 walleyes (13, 14+, 15"), mostly on a white floating jighead (leech) along with a nightcrawler harness (brass blade) / bottom bouncer. First drop off heading out from the ramp.

Today, I had the opportunity to get out on Maxinkuckee for a few hours , and a net result of 3 walleye (to 18") and 2 smallmouth (to 17") proved somewhat gratifying. Fished from 7:15am to 2pm, and checking depth levels from 9'to 25' proved to be worthwhile. A bottom-walking sinker and floating jig head (tipped with a crawler) proved to be effective for walleye, but the smallmouth were susceptible to crankbaits trolled at approx. 3mph., at a depth of 22'. Productive features- weedy points & humps adjacent to deep water; having a minimum depth of 50'. ( I'm confident that prolonged overcast light conditions, a result of a stagnated cold front,(just north of Indiana) put some fish on-the-move from 9:30am until aprox. 11:30. And as both air & waters temps continue to heat up, my expectation is that all species will begin to assert themselves on structure more aggressively. Working out Maxinkuckee is and has been a challenge, but as I learn more about this body of water, it appears to have a healthy smallmouth & walleye population. Hope to get back out there ASAP. Once again Maxinkuckee proved to be a formidable lake as brisk winds & heavy downpours made fishing an arduous task. At about 11am, once chunky smallmouth-16" & one huge white bass-17" slammed a spoonplug at 22'. Both fish were taken about 5 minutes apart and located off a large weedy point adjacent to deep water- 60'. Shortly thereafter, the winds picked up, rainfall abated, and temps dropped off a couple of degrees, along with fish activity. (At least while I was on the water 10:30am-6pm.)

Comment: Wind is often a factor on Maxinkuckee, and coupled with this lake's structural composition; sharp breaking jagged features, proper lure presentation at vaious depth levels can prove to be a daunting task.

Fish Intimidator,

Great report! I begin fishing Max. late last fall and only during the daylight hours. This year, I've been out there 2 times-4/30 & 5/7 and working the waters from around noon until 8pm, like yourself. Though fishing results were meager, on my trip, one keeper walleye brightened my day, along with 2 smallies (13"& 14") and a few large rock bass. Maxinkuckee has enumerated structure situations which break sharply, and its clear deep water can challenge newcomers in search of walleye. I look forward to working these waters a few more times this year, and in the event I happen to make contact with any more respectable smallies or walleyes, I plan on posting those results.

P.S. Indiana anglers need to communicate more often!!

Keep em coming, WMK

Ahh, finally got some slime in my new boat!

Water temps were 48+ on the main lake and up to 56+ in the channels. Caught some nice bluegills on waxworms and one dink largemouth on a jerkbait. Weather was much nicer than anticipated.

Still a bit early... I think no one else caught anything (we talked to).
