Considering that the Mitchell rod is only $10 more for the combo as opposed to buying the reel alone I would not expect that much out of it.

Id have to disagree there with you fishnsteel. My fishing setup as of today is an ultra light rod (Shakespeare pro-am) with that same mitchell. That cheep pro-am has caught big salmon,bass,northers...any other aggressive fish. Ive never broken a rod in my life. And what are the odds of breaking the same (NEW) rod twice in one day...And also paying about twice as much as the pro-aim. Now ask yourself if its really the fisherman... I don't THINK SO. Also fished shoto yesterday afternoon and caught 3 brookies on a tiny gold champ.

Maybe the reason they keep breaking is the fisherman and not the rod. You can't horse these fish in like they're blugills you have to know how to fight them. I have seen guys set the hook so hard on these fish that their rod snap and then they get mad and start wining. Now I don't know anout the quality of mitchell rods but I love their reels. If I were to suggest a rod I would say the Rapala tournament class HM-45 is a great steelhead rod. By the way was in shoto on sunday and got one fresh female.

Hey Guys,
I just was looking for some info on SteelHead river fishing & I saw all the negative press on snagging.
My Dad use to take me snagging every fall in the 1970's era. We snagged in Manitowoc, Kenosha, St Joseph's, Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay .... From what I remember I could count the number of trout I saw snagged on my left hand. The vast majority of the fish were chinooks that were not in very good shape. We smoked them and they were tasty.
I also remember the mess of dead kings laid open for eggs only. At that time, I think snagging served its purpose except for the pigs that ruined it for everyone else.
Now it seems their are much more trout in the rivers due to stocking from the pictures I see people post and snagging has become a thing of the past for the better.
Does anyone remember if there were many trout in the rivers in the 1970's?
When do the Steelhead and Browns exit the rivers and head out to the Lake?
I definately would like to try fishing for Steelhead but without the snagging hooks!
Regards
Wil
I've had great luck with the Shakespeare Synergy series rods, cheap ($25 or so at gander), I have a 7ft I use for crankbaits while bass fishing, and I use the same rod for Kings and Browns off the piers in kewaunee. sorry for no report
I've heard nothing good about Mitchell's new stuff. You'd be well served to buy quality stuff. It will be cheaper in the long run because it will last.

I cought about 3 suckers the first time when it broke and around one sucker and fought a monster catfish before it broke the second time. Ive owned Shakespeare rods (cheep) at that and never had any problems...........I figured that Mitchell had quality equipment. I love the reel but the rod has to go..
Knowing him he didn't have to catch any to break his rod ;)

Went to shoto yesterday with a friend. Lots and lots of suckers seen plenty of steelhead also. A little advice for Mitchell fishers. Dont by the 308x combo, snaped on me 2 times in one day. Went back to fleet they replaced the rod and it snapped again in 3 places. The reels are great but the rods suck.
this last week dnr busted some people with 15 rainbows they caught from the bridge at night. hope it wasnt any of you folks.
